Chapter 9 - The Ledger of Shadows

Two months after the dust settled in Chicago, the quiet routine of the estate was shattered by an unexpected dispatch from London. A sealed black leather ledger—rescued from Dante Moretti’s hidden vault—arrived via trusted courier. It contained decades of off-the-books transactions, listing crooked politicians, union leaders, and silent partners scattered across the Eastern seaboard.

Vittorio sat in his mahogany-paneled study, the desk lit only by the low glow of a banker’s lamp. Beside him sat Marco, his right-hand man, nursing a glass of scotch.

"Moretti kept records on everyone," Marco said, leaning forward. "Half the Senate is in this book, Vittorio. We could force total surrender from the rival families before sunrise. We can own the entire East Coast outright."

Vittorio ran his fingers over the thick parchment pages, feeling the weight of absolute leverage. Months ago, he would have seized the opportunity without hesitation, using the threat of exposure to expand the Rinaldi territory to unprecedented bounds.

Instead, he closed the ledger with a heavy thud.

"If we build our future on blackmail, we live under constant threat of exposure," Vittorio said softly, his eyes reflecting the dark wood of the desk. "Moretti thought fear was absolute. He died alone in a basement because no one truly stood by him."

"What do you want to do with it?" Marco asked, stunned.

"Burn it," Vittorio replied without a beat. "We clear the board. From tonight, our business operates through legitimate logistics, green energy, and private security. No backroom coercion. No lingering shadows for Giulia to inherit."

Marco stared at his boss for a long moment, seeing the hardened king he had followed for a decade replaced by a man looking thirty years into the future. Nodding slowly, Marco took the ledger to the marble hearth, lit a single match, and dropped it onto the leather cover.

As the pages curled into ash, Vittorio looked out the French doors toward the gardens. In the distance, through the quiet night, he could hear the faint sound of wind chimes hanging near Nina’s cottage. The darkness was finally losing its grip.
