Chapter 2 - The Red Light and the Traitor’s Face

The sharp click of the auto-injector echoing through the mahogany-paneled study was followed by a gasp that sounded like someone breaking through a sheet of thick river ice.

Alejandro Moretti’s chest heaved upward. His eyes, seconds ago glazed and swimming in the terrifying fog of asphyxiation, snapped wide open with violent clarity. A ragged, whistling breath tore from his throat as oxygen rushed back into his starved lungs. He coughed, his hands flying to his neck, his fingers digging into the expensive fabric of his silk tie as if to rip it away.

Over him stood a tiny four-year-old girl, her pink rabbit backpack still dangling from one thin shoulder, her small face pale with terror yet set with an astonishing, unyielding determination.

"Don't move," I whispered, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to sound brave. "You... you have to stay still so your heart doesn't race."

Alejandro blinked, his dark, piercing gaze focusing slowly. He was a man who commanded legions, a man whose word dictated life and death across the entire eastern seaboard. Yet here he was, flat on his back on a Persian rug, saved from certain death by a child who barely reached his knees.

Before Alejandro could speak, a sharp metallic click broke the heavy silence of the room.

One of the guards who had tried to stop me—Officer Vance, a man whose salary was secretly padded by the Moretti syndicate’s internal security fund—stared in horror not at Alejandro, but toward the corner of the room.

Following his terrified gaze, I turned my head.

Tucked discreetly behind a set of leather-bound law volumes in the custom mahogany bookshelf was a tiny, pulsing red light.

A micro-surveillance camera.

Installed by Alejandro himself months ago, completely unknown to the domestic staff and security details alike, designed to monitor anyone entering his private sanctuary.

Vance’s face drained of all color, turning the ash-gray shade of a corpse. His hand twitched toward the holster beneath his suit jacket, his fingers trembling violently.

"Vance," Alejandro rasped, his voice still hoarse, yet carrying the freezing, lethal weight of an avalanche.

The guard didn't answer. He lunged for his weapon.

In a fraction of a second, Alejandro—despite having just cheated death by a hair’s breadth—rolled with terrifying agility. His hand swept out, catching Vance behind the ankle. The guard crashed hard against the marble hearth, his pistol skidding across the floor and coming to a stop near my pink sneakers.

Footsteps thundered down the hallway. Within seconds, half a dozen armed enforcers poured into the study, weapons drawn, shouting commands and locking down the perimeter.

"Boss!" the head of security, Marcus, cried out, rushing forward. He stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting from Alejandro—who was slowly pushing himself up to his elbows—to Vance groaning on the floor, and finally to me, standing frozen with an empty EpiPen in my hand.

Alejandro ignored the chaos. He didn't look at Vance. He didn't look at Marcus.

His dark, fathomless eyes locked entirely onto me.

"Who taught you how to use that?" Alejandro asked, his voice low, steady, and vibrating with an intense, hypnotic focus.

"Mama," I whispered, clutching my rabbit backpack tighter. "She... she has bad allergies too. She told me the blue goes to the sky, and the orange goes to the thigh. She said if someone can't breathe, you have to be brave."

Alejandro slowly rose to his feet. He towered over the room, dusting off his bespoke suit, every trace of his near-fatal weakness vanished, replaced by the terrifying aura of the apex predator he truly was.

He looked down at Vance, then glanced toward the bookshelf camera.

"Marcus," Alejandro said, his voice dropping into an icy register that made every guard in the room stiffen. "Pull the server logs from that lens. I want every frame of who poured my vintage Bordeaux tonight. And lock down the estate. Nobody leaves. Nobody breathes without my permission."

Marcus nodded grimly, grabbing the whimpering guard by the collar and hauling him off the floor.

Alejandro turned back to me. He knelt down until his eyes were level with mine. The harsh overhead chandelier cast sharp shadows across his scarred, sharp-angled face, making him look like a creature of the dark.

Yet, when he reached out and gently touched my trembling hand, his touch was surprisingly steady.

"What is your name, little one?" he asked softly.

"Emma," I whispered.

May you like

Alejandro’s gaze softened just a fraction—a microscopic shift that no one else in the room would have ever dared to notice.

"Emma," he repeated, tasting the name on his tongue as if sealing a sacred oath. "You saved my life tonight. And in this house, debts are never forgotten."
