Chapter 7 - Uncovering the Hidden Ledger
With the house entirely ours again, I began the massive task of cleaning out the guest bedrooms and reorganizing the office space.
It was during this deep clean that I stumbled upon something Diane had kept hidden in the bottom drawer of her locked filing cabinet—a thick, leather-bound ledger labeled Personal Expenses & Debts.
Curiosity getting the better of me, I opened it.
Page after page revealed a shocking financial paper trail. Diane hadn't just been living off my financial support; she had been secretly funneling thousands of dollars from household accounts to pay off Marissa’s credit card defaults, luxury car payments, and high-interest online loans.
Even worse, there were notices from utility companies and property tax authorities warning of impending liens due to unpaid secondary assessments—bills that Diane had deliberately intercepted and hidden from me while demanding I hand over extra cash for "groceries and repairs."
They hadn't just been disrespectful.
They had been systematically bleeding the household dry while plotting to force a sale of the property.
I sat back in the leather desk chair, the ledger resting open in my lap. The anger I had felt earlier that week transformed into cold, analytical resolve.
I gathered every page of the ledger, scanned each one into my digital archives, and forwarded the complete financial dossier to Attorney Robert Vance.
Within two hours, Bob called me back.
“Sarah,” Bob said, his tone grim. “This isn't just a family dispute anymore. This constitutes financial fraud and embezzlement of trust assets. Diane was acting as a secondary trustee on specific auxiliary accounts, and she systematically misappropriated funds.”
“Can we press charges?” I asked.

“We can,” Bob confirmed. “And given what they pulled with your daughter in the storm, we have more than enough leverage to ensure they never attempt to contest the trust or harass you again.”
“File everything,” I said firmly. “Let the courts sort it out.”
