Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Vales

The lobby of The Hawthorne Estate became the stage for their final humiliation.
As the board members filed out of the ballroom, refusing to even look at Michael or Cassandra, two uniformed police officers stepped into the foyer.
District Attorney Marcus Walsh walked up to the table where Michael and Cassandra sat huddled together in utter ruin.
"Michael Whitaker," DA Walsh announced, pulling a document from his coat. "You are under arrest for felony elder abuse, aggravated assault, and corporate wire fraud."
"No! Please! Dad!" Michael shrieked, scrambling backward out of his chair, throwing himself at my feet. He grabbed the hem of my trousers, weeping hysterically, the arrogant man vanished, leaving only a pathetic coward. "Dad, please! I made a mistake! She manipulated me! Cassandra made me do it! Please don't let them take me! I’m your son!"
I looked down at him. There was no anger left in my heart—only a deep, hollow pity for the boy I had failed to raise properly.
"You ceased being my son the moment you put your hands on your mother, Michael," I said softly, stepping back from his grasp.
The officers grabbed Michael by his arms, hauling him to his feet, snapping metallic handcuffs tightly around his wrists. He kicked and wept, screaming my name as he was dragged across the polished marble floor toward the waiting police cruiser outside.
Cassandra didn't escape.
"Cassandra Vale," DA Walsh continued, turning to the trembling woman in red. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, receiving stolen property, and felony assault accessory."
As the female officer pulled Cassandra’s hands behind her back, Cassandra panicked, kicking her heels and screaming at her father. "Dad! Do something! Call the lawyers! Help me!"
Richard Vale didn't move. He sat frozen in his chair, staring blankly at the wall, knowing that within twenty-four hours, federal agents would be raiding his own offices for fraud. His family’s legacy, built on lies and stolen wealth, had collapsed in a single afternoon.
Before the officers led Cassandra away, Ellen stood up from the conference table.
She walked slowly across the room, stopping directly in front of Cassandra.
Cassandra glared at her through tear-stained mascara, her lip trembling. "What? Are you happy now, you old bitch? You destroyed everything!"
Ellen didn't flinch. She reached out her hand, reached into Cassandra’s open designer clutch resting on the table, and pulled out the small velvet gift box.

Ellen opened the box, verifying the pearl brooch with the Sri Lankan sapphire was safe inside. She snapped the box shut, looked Cassandra dead in the eye, and spoke with quiet, absolute dignity.
"My mother always taught me that pearls represent tears," Ellen said softly. "I hope you enjoy yours."
