Chapter 3 - The Paramedic’s Verdict

The atmosphere inside the precinct shifted from tense uncertainty to controlled chaos the moment Sarah and her partner hoisted the stretcher carrying Olivia toward the front exit.

Olivia was frighteningly still, her small face pale against the white pillow of the gurney, her breath coming in shallow, ragged hitches. Emma walked right beside the wheels, her hand firmly planted on the metal railing of the stretcher, refusing to let go even when Sarah gently guided her toward the rear doors of the ambulance.

"Can I ride with her?" Emma asked, her voice cracking with a vulnerability that tore at Daniel’s chest.

"Yes, sweetheart, you can ride right beside her," Sarah assured her, opening the ambulance doors and locking the gurney securely into place. "I need you to sit on the bench seat and hold this oxygen mask near her face, just like this. Can you do that for me?"

Emma nodded solemnly, climbing into the back of the vehicle without a backward glance at the rain or her father, who was still hammering his fists against the exterior hood of his SUV in the parking lot.

Daniel stood on the precinct steps, watching the ambulance lights flare as the vehicle reversed out of the lot and roared down the street toward County General Hospital. He noted the license plate of Michael’s SUV, the exact time of departure—4:34 p.m.—and the way Michael scrambled back into his vehicle, spinning his tires on the wet pavement as he gave chase behind the medical transport.

Daniel walked back inside the station, the air feeling suddenly thin and cold.

The box fan continued its rhythmic rattle. On the front counter sat the sealed evidence envelope containing the empty oral medicine syringe with its faded blue pharmacy code. Beside it lay the printed dispatch log, the missing-child notice Michael had filed, and the pharmacy transaction record that had pulled up Michael’s name as the prescriber.

Daniel walked over to his desk, picked up his department-issued phone, and dialed the direct extension for Detective Miller in Major Crimes.

"Miller," a gruff voice answered on the second ring.

"Jim, it’s Daniel Reed down at Precinct Four. I need you to pull a priority investigative hold on a pharmacy dispensing record and coordinate an immediate search warrant for a residence on Elmhurst Lane."

Miller sighed heavily on the other end. "Daniel, it’s past four o'clock on a Tuesday. What kind of mess have you walked into this time?"

"The kind where a father forces an oral sedative down his five-year-old daughter’s throat using an unapproved syringe while taking her twin out to hide evidence," Daniel said evenly. "The child is currently in an ambulance heading to County General in septic or toxic shock. The father is currently tailing the ambulance. I have the physical evidence here, the pharmacy code, and the security footage."

Silence stretched across the line for three full seconds.

"Did you say a five-year-old?" Miller asked, his tone shifting instantly from dismissive to razor-sharp.

"I did. And there's a twin sister who watched the whole thing," Daniel replied. "I need you down at County General right now to secure the hospital room. Make sure Child Protective Services is dispatched immediately. Nobody—and I mean nobody—gets near those girls unless my name or yours is on the visitor log."

"Consider it done," Miller said. "What about the father?"

"Let him tail the ambulance," Daniel said grimly, picking up his service belt and buckling it securely around his waist. "Because the moment he steps foot inside that hospital looking to finish what he started, we’re going to drop the hammer."
