Chapter 4 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE IMPOSTOR

The interior of the grand foyer at Cedar Ridge Lane descended into utter chaos within minutes.

Chloe came rushing down the stairs, her hair half-combed and her designer handbag clutched tightly in her arms. Her face was flushed with panic as she saw the sheriff’s deputies standing by the door and Robert Vance reviewing documents on the marble entry table.

“Mason! What is going on?” Chloe shrieked, her voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings. “Why are there police officers in the house? Someone just told us we have to leave!”

“Shut up, Chloe! Just shut up!” Mason yelled back, pacing frantically across the living room floor, his phone still clutched in a white-knuckled grip as call after call to corporate contacts went straight to voicemail.

He marched up to Robert, his face contorted with desperation and fury.

“This is a mistake! A bad joke!” Mason snarled, leaning close to Robert’s face. “Victoria doesn’t own this estate! When we married, my name was added to the architectural expansion plans, and I personally oversaw the kitchen renovation! I am the head of this household!”

Robert didn’t flinch. He calmly zipped his leather briefcase and looked up at Mason with an expression of profound pity.

“Mr. Cardenas, overseeing a kitchen renovation does not grant you title deeds,” Robert said evenly. “The land was purchased in 2014 by the Victoria Vance Trust, funded entirely through private capital inheritance. Your name was never added to the title because, under the prenuptial agreement you signed in my office on October twelfth, 2021, you explicitly waived all marital claims to pre-existing real estate holdings, private trusts, and corporate assets.”

Mason stopped dead in his tracks.

The words echoed in his mind, dragging him back to a sunny autumn afternoon four years ago when he had signed a stack of wedding documents without reading them, laughing as he told Victoria that love didn’t need fine print.

“No,” Mason breathed, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “That’s... that’s not true. Cardenas Construction... I built that company! I negotiated the municipal contracts! I’m the CEO!”

“You were appointed as a managing director,” Robert corrected smoothly, pulling a second file from his briefcase and opening it to reveal a series of detailed financial spreadsheets. “A managing director whose salary was paid by the parent holding company—Vance Capital Industries. And speaking of Cardenas Construction, our forensic audit completed last night revealed some fascinating discrepancies.”

Robert slid a single printed page across the marble table toward Mason.

Mason’s eyes scanned the numbers, and the last remaining trace of color vanished entirely from his face.

The page detailed thirty-four unauthorized wire transfers totaling over six hundred thousand dollars—funds siphoned from corporate escrow accounts directly into personal offshore accounts controlled by Mason, alongside substantial luxury boutique purchases and salon leases registered under the name Chloe Miller.

“Embezzlement,” Robert said softly. “Corporate fraud. Grand larceny. Combined with domestic abandonment and the fraudulent misrepresentation of company assets to commercial lenders.”

Chloe, who had crept closer to read over Mason’s shoulder, let out a piercing shriek.

“You said those accounts were company discretionary funds!” Chloe screamed, grabbing the front of Mason’s designer suit jacket and shaking him violently. “You told me the company was yours! You told me we were untouchable!”

“Get your hands off me!” Mason shoved her away, losing whatever remaining shred of composure he had left.

“Thirty minutes, Mr. Cardenas,” one of the sheriff’s deputies stepped forward, resting a hand heavily on the holster of his service belt. “Pack your bags and get off the property.”
