Chapter 4 - The House of Secrets

The next morning, Detective Miller called me back to my childhood home. The property was now wrapped in yellow crime scene tape, teeming with forensic investigators in white suits carrying evidence bags and floodlights.
"You need to see this, Adrian," Miller said quietly, leading me past the kitchen and down into the basement of the house—a place I hadn't spent much time in since I was a teenager.
In the far corner of the basement, hidden behind an old wooden pantry, was a heavy steel safe that had been cut open by police tools. Spread out across a folding table were stacks of financial documents, forged deeds, prescription bottles, and notebooks.
"Your brother spilled everything during his confession," Miller explained, gesturing to the papers. "Your mother wasn't just cruel, Adrian. She was a systematic predator."
He pointed to a black ledger. "Three months ago, your mother realized Maya's trust fund was running dry. She needed a new source of capital. So, she targeted you and Ellie."
I frowned, my chest tightening. "Me?"
"She forged real estate transfer documents to put your home—the house you bought with your own hard-earned money—into her name. But she needed Ellie’s signature to complete the transfer without raising red flags at the title company."
Miller picked up a small plastic prescription bottle filled with clear liquid. "Ellie wasn't having a naturally difficult pregnancy, Adrian."
I froze. "What are you talking about?"
"This is liquid lorazepam—a potent sedative. Forensic testing confirmed it was mixed into the herbal teas your mother insistence on brewing for Ellie every morning. Your mother was micro-dosing her for months, causing the dizziness, nausea, and disorientation, making it look like pregnancy complications."
The room spun beneath my feet. Rage, cold and absolute, washed over me. The hospital visits, Ellie’s terrified tears, the constant fear that we were going to lose our child—it hadn't been nature. It had been my own mother, poisoning my wife in our own home.
"When you went to Columbus," Miller continued, "Ellie accidentally found this safe open while looking for extra towels. She saw Maya's stolen IDs and the forged house deeds. Before she could react, Brandon hit her from behind. They dragged her to the shed, padlocked her in, and planned to starve her into signing the transfer papers."
"And if she refused?" my voice was barely a whisper, thick with deadly fury.
Miller hesitated, looking at me with deep sympathy. "Your mother told Brandon that if Ellie didn't cooperate by Sunday... they would move her into the subterranean chamber with Maya, sell your house, and tell you that Ellie had suffered a psychotic break and run away."

"You should have come home on Sunday like you were supposed to," Grace’s words echoed in my mind with terrifying clarity.
If I hadn't come home forty-eight hours early... if the client hadn't signed that contract... Ellie and my unborn child would have vanished forever into the dark beneath the earth.
