Chapter 5 - The Web of Treason

The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.

Gwendolyn froze, her eyes widening in horror as Julian Sterling’s voice continued to vibrate through the smartphone speaker.

"Gwendolyn? Are you there? Is Lucas out of the house?" Julian asked, his tone laced with an intimate, conspiratorial familiarity that made my blood run cold. "Remember, once the check clears into our offshore account, you leave him. I've already booked our flights to St. Thomas for Friday."

I looked down at the phone, then slowly raised my eyes to meet Gwendolyn’s.

She wasn't just stealing my mother’s land. She was having an affair with her co-conspirator—the very attorney helping her forge the transfer documents. My entire three-year marriage had been a meticulous, predatory trap designed to strip my family of our generational inheritance and leave my mother dead in a forgotten bed.

I brought the phone to my mouth.

"Julian," I said smoothly, keeping my voice utterly level.

Silence hit the line like a hammer.

"Who... who is this?" Julian stammered, his confident tone instantly evaporating.

"This is Lucas Weaver," I replied. "The husband you're planning to rob, and the son of the woman you're trying to murder. I suggest you keep your schedule open for the rest of the afternoon. The police, the District Attorney, and the State Bar Association are going to be very interested in your 5:00 PM meeting."

I ended the call and tossed the phone onto the bed.

Outside, red and blue lights flashed through the window blinds as two police cruisers and an ambulance pulled into our driveway, their sirens whining down to a halt.

Gwendolyn panicked. She bolted toward the back door leading to the garage, attempting to make a run for her car.

"Stop right there!" Dr. Evans shouted from the hallway, stepping into her path and blocking the doorway with his solid frame.

"Get out of my way, old man!" Gwendolyn shrieked, clawing at his coat.

Two uniformed police officers burst through the front door, their guns unholstered, followed by paramedic teams carrying a fold-out gurney.

"Police! Nobody move!" Officer Vance barked, assessing the scene instantly.

"Officer! Thank God you're here!" Gwendolyn instantly wailed, dropping to her knees and squeezing out fake tears. "My husband! He went crazy! He attacked me and tried to steal my personal financial papers! He's been abusing his mother for months!"

Officer Vance looked at Gwendolyn, then looked at me standing quietly beside Dr. Evans.

I didn't yell. I didn't get angry. I simply pointed to Dr. Evans, the pile of unopened prescriptions, and the black bag.

"Officer," Dr. Evans said, stepping forward with his badge of medical certification held high. "I am Dr. Richard Evans. I am the attending physician for Mrs. Florence Weaver. I am officially filing a criminal complaint against this woman, Gwendolyn Weaver, for severe elder abuse, intentional medical deprivation, and physical assault. I have documented the injuries myself."

Officer Vance looked down at Gwendolyn, then nodded to his partner.

"Cuff her," Vance ordered.

"What?! No! You can't cuff me! I'm the victim here!" Gwendolyn screamed, thrashing wildly as the steel handcuffs snapped shut around her manicured wrists. "Lucas! Tell them! Tell them it's a mistake! Lucas, please!"

I turned my back on her as the paramedics gently moved to lift my mother onto the gurney.

As they rolled Florence out the front door, my mother reached out her feeble hand, touching my sleeve.

"Lucas..." she whispered, tears in her eyes. "Are we going to lose Dad's land?"

May you like

I squeezed her hand tightly, pressing a kiss to her bruised forehead.

"No, Mom," I promised softly. "We're taking back everything they stole from us."
