Chapter 4 - The Tipping Point

Arthur’s eyes went wide. "What did you just say?"
Before anyone could move, the sharp, authoritative sound of heavy vehicle doors slamming shut echoed from the driveway outside.
Red and blue police lights began strobing through the translucent sheer curtains of the living room, painting my parents' sunburned faces in violent shades of crimson and blue.
Eleanor gasped, spinning around to look out the front window. "Arthur... Arthur, there are police cars outside!"
Two unmarked dark sedans and three state police cruisers were parked in a semicircle on my front lawn, blocking Marcus’s rental SUV completely.
Four federal agents in tactical vests bearing the letters FBI and SEC walked up the front path, flanked by two uniformed state troopers.
"You called them?" Eleanor turned back to me, her voice a desperate, shrill screech. "You called the police on your own mother? After everything I went through to raise you?"
"You didn't raise me, Eleanor," I said, stepping back toward the kitchen island, placing myself far out of their reach. "You used me as an unpaid maid while you groomed Marcus to be a financial criminal. And when my daughter died, you sent me a picture of a cocktail."
The front door, which I had deliberately left unlocked, swung open.
Special Agent Miller stepped into the foyer, his brass badge glinting under the hallway light, followed by three armed agents.
"Arthur Hayes? Eleanor Hayes? Marcus Hayes?" Agent Miller announced, pulling a thick stack of federal arrest warrants from his coat pocket.
Arthur stepped in front of Eleanor, trying to maintain his authoritative, wealthy posture. "Is this a joke? Do you know who I am? I am a senior partner at Hayes & Associates! I demand to speak to my attorney immediately!"
"You'll have plenty of time to call your attorney, Mr. Hayes," Agent Miller said, completely unimpressed. "You, your wife, and your son are under arrest for federal wire fraud, tax evasion, money laundering, and grand larceny under the RICO statute."
"This is crazy!" Marcus yelled, backing away toward the kitchen patio door. "I didn't do anything! It was all my dad's idea! I was just an employee!"
"Marcus!" Eleanor screamed, shocked by her favorite son's instant betrayal. "How dare you!"
"It's true!" Marcus shouted, pointing a finger at our father while an officer grabbed his arms and forced them behind his back. "He ran the shell company! I just signed the papers he gave me!"
"Shut your mouth, you idiot!" Arthur spat at Marcus, his refined facade completely dissolving into pathetic, panicked profanity.

"Hands behind your back, sir," the federal agent commanded, pinning Arthur against the mahogany dining table—the same table where he had demanded forty thousand dollars from me five minutes ago.
The metal cuffs clicked softly around my father's wrists.
