Chapter 7 - Stripped of Crown and Cloak

The fallout was swift, absolute, and merciless.

Within forty-eight hours of the tribunal, the state medical licensing board revoked Dr. Cameron Bennett’s medical license permanently, citing gross medical negligence, physical battery, ethical violations, and endangerment of a patient.

St. Jude Memorial Hospital formally terminated his employment for cause, simultaneously freezing all pension and retirement benefits pending the ongoing federal investigation into the embezzlement of department research grants.

Sophie Miller was fired from her residency program, blacklisted from every accredited medical institution in the country, and facing state criminal charges for tampering with electronic health records and perjury.

In the civil courts, my petition for divorce was granted on grounds of extreme cruelty, attempted endangerment, and financial betrayal. Victoria secured a comprehensive settlement that stripped Cameron of his remaining personal assets, transferring ownership of our former marital assets directly into a trust established for our son, Leo.

Furthermore, family court awarded me sole legal and physical custody of Leo, granting Cameron zero visitation rights until he underwent court-mandated psychiatric evaluation, anger management counseling, and fulfilled all criminal restitution obligations.

Two weeks after the tribunal, as I was walking out of the hospital administration building carrying a stack of departmental budget reports, I saw him for the last time.

Cameron was sitting on a concrete bench outside the perimeter fence, looking hollow, disheveled, and completely broken. He had no car, no badge, no white coat, and no future.

As I approached the exit, he caught sight of me. He stood up, taking a hesitant, pathetic step toward the gate.

“Amelia...” his voice cracked, sounding small and defeated. “Please... just five minutes. Talk to me.”

I didn't stop walking. I didn't even turn my head to look at him.

To me, he was already invisible—a ghost lingering in the margins of a life he had tried to destroy, only to be consumed by his own malice.

I pushed through the glass automatic doors, stepping out into the bright, crisp autumn air of Chicago, sliding into waiting transportation that would take me home to my son.
