Chapter 4 - The Mistress’s Awakening and the Sinking Ship

By five o'clock that evening, the news had already broken across financial news networks and digital media outlets throughout the Pacific Northwest.

“Tech Mogul Jared Harlan Arrested in Federal Raid; Harlan Media Board Strips Founder of All Executive Powers Amid Medical Fraud Scandal.”

The scandal was monumental. Stock prices for Harlan Media plummeted thirty-five percent within four hours of the market opening. Advertisers pulled out by the dozens. Vanguard Media publicly terminated merger talks within minutes of hearing the audio recordings played on local news broadcasts.

And out in the exclusive South Waterfront high-rise penthouse paid for by Harlan Media corporate funds, Courtney Briggs was about to discover that the golden parachute she had been banking on was actually a bag of heavy rocks.

I sat in the back of my lawyer's sleek black town car as it pulled up beneath the secure porte-cochère of the residential tower. Beside me sat Eleanor Vance and a court-appointed receiver tasked with recovering corporate assets wrongfully diverted to third-party beneficiaries.

We rode the private elevator up to the penthouse suite on the forty-fifth floor.

When Eleanor pressed the doorbell, it took nearly thirty seconds before the heavy oak door swung open.

Courtney stood in the doorway, wearing a silk designer bathrobe, her hair slightly messy, her six-month baby bump clearly visible beneath the silk. She looked flushed, undoubtedly having spent the last two hours refreshing Twitter and panic-calling Jared’s phone while it rang endlessly in a federal holding cell.

The moment she saw me standing behind Eleanor, the smug, entitled expression on her face curdled into sharp, defensive hostility. 🎨

"What are you doing here?" Courtney snapped, planting one hand on her hip while the other instinctively guarded her stomach. "If you're here to scream and throw a tantrum, save your breath. Jared is going to be released by morning, and when he gets out, the first thing he’s doing is having you committed."

I didn't answer right away. I slowly stepped past her into the expansive, sun-drenched penthouse, taking in the vaulted ceilings, the designer Italian furniture, and the priceless modern art hanging on the walls—all purchased with embezzled corporate funds that legally belonged to the primary trust.

"Jared isn't coming home, Courtney," I said calmly, turning to face her.

Courtney scoffed, though a tiny flicker of genuine panic crossed her eyes. "You wish. He loves me. He loves our baby. That child is going to inherit everything he owns."

Eleanor stepped forward, holding out a thick legal document stamped with a federal judge’s signature.

"Ms. Briggs, allow me to introduce myself," Eleanor said smoothly. "I am senior legal counsel for Shelby Harlan and the primary corporate trust. Effective immediately, this residential lease—along with every luxury vehicle, designer handbag, jewelry piece, and financial stipend provided to you by Jared Harlan or Harlan Media—has been revoked pursuant to federal asset recovery laws governing stolen corporate property."

Courtney’s jaw dropped. "Revoked? What are you talking about?! Jared owns this company! He can buy whatever he wants for me and his child!"

"Jared doesn't own a toothbrush anymore," I replied, walking slowly toward her until we were standing just a few feet apart. I looked down at her swollen belly, feeling neither anger nor pity—only a profound, chilling indifference. "Every share he held has been frozen and transferred to the primary trust. The corporate accounts funding this penthouse have been audited and locked. And as for your baby being the 'heir to the Harlan family'?"

I smiled—a cold, razor-sharp smile that made Courtney physically recoil.

"You're carrying the child of a federal inmate facing twenty-five years in a maximum-security penitentiary," I whispered. "There is no empire left to inherit, Courtney. There's only debt, disgrace, and a man who is already figuring out how to blame you for his ruin."

Courtney’s face lost every drop of color. She grabbed the edge of the doorframe for support, her breath hitching in her throat. "No... no, that's not true! He promised me! He said we were going to Paris next week! He said—"

"He lied to you," I interrupted quietly. "Just like he lied to me. The only difference is, I figured it out before it was too late. You hitched your wagon to a sinking ship, Courtney. And now you get to drown with it."

May you like

I turned my back on her, walking toward the private elevator.

As the doors slid closed, the last thing I saw was Courtney sliding down the oak doorframe in her silk bathrobe, pressing her hands against her face, finally weeping as the glittering, fraudulent castle of sand she had built around herself washed away into the sea.
