Chapter 5 - Margaret’s Counter-Attack and Legal Threats

While we planned our next steps inside the sanctuary of the Bennett estate, chaos was erupting inside the gleaming glass towers of the Whitmore Foundation in downtown Manhattan.

Margaret Whitmore was discovering what it meant to lose absolute control.

By noon the following day, three major corporate sponsors had pulled their multi-million-dollar funding pledges following reports of the charity luncheon scandal. Local news outlets were running front-page headlines detailing the verbal abuse and the shocking public extraction of a widowed mother and her three young daughters by billionaire Richard Bennett.

Margaret sat behind her massive mahogany desk, her face contorted in fury as her lead corporate attorney, Arthur Pendelton, shifted nervously in his leather armchair.

“What do you mean, you can’t stop the investigation?” Margaret shrieked, slamming a silver paperweight onto the desk. “Use our political connections! Call the district attorney! Have Bennett’s hospital network audited by the state health board!”

Arthur pushed his glasses up his nose, looking desperately uncomfortable. “Margaret, you don’t understand. Richard Bennett isn't just a donor; he holds significant sway over the state medical board and federal healthcare subsidies. Furthermore, his legal team didn't just file a standard complaint—they initiated a formal federal inquiry into the probate filings of Michael Whitmore’s estate.”

Margaret went deathly pale. The smug, untouchable veneer cracked completely. “The probate... that was closed five years ago. The widow signed away all claims.”

“She signed under duress based on financial documents provided exclusively by your office,” Arthur corrected quietly. “And if Bennett’s forensic accountants get a court order to audit the original trust accounts... Margaret, we’re looking at federal mail fraud, forgery, and embezzlement.”

Margaret stood up so fast her chair screeched against the polished floor. “I am a Whitmore! We built this city! That ungrateful little peasant—that woman who couldn't even give my son a grandson—thinks she can take down my foundation?”

“She isn't alone anymore,” Arthur warned. “Bennett has put his personal legal bulldogs on the case. They’ve already filed an emergency injunction freezing the foundation’s secondary discretionary accounts.”

Before Margaret could scream another order, the heavy oak door of her office burst open.

Her executive assistant rushed inside, clutching a tablet with a pale, panicked expression. “Mrs. Whitmore... you need to see this. The state department of child welfare just filed an emergency petition for a welfare audit of the Whitmore estate based on reports of systematic labor exploitation and child neglect in the service quarters.”

Margaret grabbed the edge of her desk to steady herself. The walls she had built to protect her dynasty were collapsing inward from every direction.

“Get me the best private investigators in the country,” Margaret whispered, her voice shaking with venomous hatred. “Find out where Bennett is hiding her. I want that woman destroyed.”
