Chapter 2 - The Discovery and the Evidence

The small plastic bottle on the side table beside Richard’s untouched coffee sat like a silent, venomous accusation. It was translucent, the label torn away with deliberate care, leaving behind only a sticky residue of adhesive. Inside, a thick, amber-tinted liquid sloshed sluggishly against the plastic walls.
Officer Vance, a seasoned detective with tired eyes and a sharp jawline, stepped closer to the table. He didn't touch it with his bare hands; instead, he pulled a pair of latex gloves from his pocket, snapping them into place with a crisp sound that cut through the heavy silence of the living room.
“Mrs. Pierce,” Officer Vance said, his voice low and professional. “Do you know what was in this bottle?”
My hands were still trembling, the metallic scent of chemical burn and panic lingering in the air. “No,” I whispered, my voice shaking. “Richard… he gave her that skincare set. He watched her open it. He watched her put it on her face.”
Daniel stepped forward, his face drained of all color. He stared at the bottle, then at the ruined silver box with its red velvet ribbon, the glittering remnants of a malicious trap disguised as a Christmas present.
“My dad wouldn’t…” Daniel started, his voice cracking, the denial a reflex born of a lifetime of conditioning. But as he looked at the empty spot by the fireplace where his father had stood just minutes ago, the words died in his throat. The reality of what Richard had done crashed down on him like a physical blow. “He’s gone,” Daniel choked out. “He actually did it.”
“Officer,” I said, finding a sudden, icy surge of strength. “At the hospital, the doctors said it was a severe chemical burn, possibly a concentrated acid or a stripping agent mixed into a cosmetic base. They’re running tests on the cream left in the jar now. That bottle… that must be what he used to lace it.”
Officer Vance carefully retrieved an evidence bag from his kit, sliding the amber bottle inside before sealing it. “We’re putting out an all-points bulletin for Richard Pierce right now. If he’s fled, he won’t get far. But we need to know everything. Why would a grandfather do this to his own granddaughter?”
“Because of me,” I said bitterly, tears finally spilling over my lashes. “I stopped him from taking Emma on that hunting trip. I found out he left her unattended in his truck outside a bar for hours while he drank. When I confronted him and put my foot down, he told me I was destroying his family. He said I would regret standing in his way.”
Daniel dropped to his knees, burying his face in his hands. The pillars of his world had crumbled. The man he had looked up to, the patriarch of the family, was a monster who had targeted an innocent nine-year-old child just to punish a mother’s protective instincts.

“I’m so sorry,” Daniel wept, his shoulders shaking. “I should have seen it. I should have protected you both from him years ago.”
“We’ll protect each other now,” I said, kneeling beside him and pulling him into a tight embrace. But in the back of my mind, a chilling thought remained: Where is Richard, and what will he try next?
