Chapter 4 - The Matriarch's Shadow

The news of the newborn baby at Redwood Valley Medical Center spread through the elite circles of Texas society like a silent wildfire.

By noon the following day, the story had reached the top floor of the Pierce Estate in River Oaks.

Abigail was sitting in her VIP room, holding a warm cup of soup while Nurse Brenda checked Leo’s vital signs, when the heavy oak doors of the suite were suddenly pushed open without a knock.

Four men in dark corporate suits stepped into the room first, taking positions along the wall with cold, professional authority. Behind them walked a woman in her late fifties, wearing a tailored cream-colored Chanel suit, heavy diamond earrings, and a dark fur wrap despite the moderate autumn weather.

Her silver hair was coiffed into a flawless bun, her lips painted a severe, blood-red shade.

Victoria Pierce had arrived.

Nurse Brenda immediately stepped in front of Leo’s bassinet. "Ma'am! You can't be in here! This is a restricted patient wing!"

Victoria didn't even glance at the nurse. She raised a gloved hand, and one of her suited guards smoothly stepped forward, holding out a laminated administrative document.

"I am Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees for this medical center, young lady," Victoria said, her voice dripping with artificial elegance and freezing authority. "I go wherever I please in this hospital. Leave us."

"Brenda, it's okay," Abigail said quietly, setting her soup down on the tray. She stood up slowly, clutching her robe around her waist, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Stay by Leo."

Victoria’s sharp, predatory eyes traveled down Abigail’s simple clothes, lingering on her unadorned hair, her pale face, and her worn canvas shoes resting beside the bed. A look of profound, unadulterated disgust flashed across Victoria’s features.

"So," Victoria murmured, stepping closer to the bed, her expensive heels clicking loudly on the polished floor. "You are the little diner girl Harrison has been making a spectacle of."

Abigail held her head high, refusing to shrink under the woman's terrifying gaze. "My name is Abigail. And you are trespassing in my private room."

Victoria let out a soft, mocking laugh. "Private room? My dear, every brick in this facility was paid for by Pierce capital. You are sitting on my charity."

Victoria walked slowly toward the glass bassinet where tiny Leo lay sleeping. She looked down at the infant for a brief, cold second. When her eyes caught the tiny cinnamon crescent mark behind the baby's left ear, her jaw clutched so hard a muscle twitched in her neck.

"It seems Julian left behind a messy little biological error before he disappeared," Victoria said smoothly, pulling a sleek leather checkbook from her handbag.

Abigail’s blood boiled. "Don't you dare call my son an error!"

Victoria ignored the outburst, opening the checkbook and unscrewing the cap of a gold fountain pen.

"Let's be adult about this, Abigail," Victoria said, writing briskly on the slip of paper. "Julian is gone. He was an unstable, impulsive boy who ruined his own future, and clearly, he had no interest in being a father to your child. You are twenty-six years old, penniless, working for minimum wage, with no family to back you."

Victoria tore the check from the book with a sharp SNAP and held it out between two gloved fingers.

"This is a check for two million dollars," Victoria stated, her voice as flat and transaction-focused as an auctioneer. "You will sign a full non-disclosure agreement, waive all rights to the Pierce name and estate, pack your belongings, and take this child out of the state of Texas before the week is over. You will never contact Harrison again, and you will never tell a soul who this child's father is."

Abigail stared at the piece of paper. Two million dollars. It was an amount of money that could buy her a house, pay for Leo’s education, and ensure she never had to work a double shift at the diner again.

She looked at Victoria’s cold, lifeless eyes. Then she looked at her sleeping baby.

Abigail stepped forward. She reached out and took the check from Victoria's hand.

A subtle, triumphant smile touched Victoria’s red lips. "Smart girl. I knew you'd see reason—"

CRACK.

Abigail didn't hesitate. She ripped the two-million-dollar check directly down the middle.

She ripped it again. And again.

Until the paper was reduced to tiny white shreds, which she tossed directly into Victoria’s surprised, immaculate face.

"My son is not for sale," Abigail said, her voice ringing through the room with a fierce, absolute clarity that made the suited guards flinch. "I don't care about your money, your estate, or your fake power. Julian ran away from you because you're a monster. And I will burn this entire city to the ground before I let you put your toxic hands on my boy."

Victoria stood frozen, several shreds of her ruined check sticking to her expensive fur wrap. Her face slowly turned a dangerous, mottled purple.

"You insolent little trash," Victoria spat, stepping into Abigail's personal space, her voice dropping into a lethal threat. "You think you can fight me? I will destroy you. I will have child protective services open an investigation into your living conditions before nightfall. I will take this baby from you, and you will end up in a state prison!"

"She won't be fighting you alone, Victoria."

The heavy oak doors slammed open again.

Dr. Harrison Pierce stepped into the room, flanked by two armed hospital security officers and the hospital’s head legal counsel.

Harrison walked straight past Victoria’s guards, positioning himself directly between Victoria and Abigail.

"Harrison!" Victoria hissed, adjusting her fur. "This ungrateful street girl just assaulted me!"

"I saw everything through the security monitor in my office, Victoria," Harrison said, his voice echoing with absolute fury. "You entered a private medical suite without authorization, threatened a patient, and attempted to bribe a mother to surrender her child."

"I am protecting this family’s reputation!" Victoria yelled, dropping her sophisticated act completely. "You are letting a diner waitress pull you into a scam! How do you even know that child is Julian's?!"

"Because he carries my blood!" Harrison roared, stepping forward until he was inches from Victoria's face. "And because I am the Chief of Staff of this hospital, I am officially revoking your board access! Security, escort Mrs. Pierce off the property immediately!"

The two armed hospital security officers stepped forward, placing their hands near their holsters. "Ma'am, please step away from the patient."

Victoria looked around the room, realizing she had lost control of the immediate floor. She smoothed down her jacket, her eyes burning with a deep, vengeful hatred as she stared at Abigail and Harrison.

"This isn't over, Harrison," Victoria whispered venomously. "You chose a deadbeat's bastard over your own empire. I will strip you of every share you hold in Pierce Global."

She turned on her expensive heels and swept out of the room, her four guards trailing behind her like silent shadows.

Abigail collapsed onto the edge of her bed, her knees shaking so violently she couldn't stand. Harrison immediately knelt beside her, picking up her cold, trembling hands.

"I am so sorry, Abigail," Harrison whispered, his eyes filled with profound remorse. "I should have protected you from her."

May you like

"She’s not going to stop, is she?" Abigail asked, looking at her son. "She’s going to come after Leo."

"Over my dead body," Harrison vowed, his grip tightening around her hands. "Tomorrow, my legal team is filing for a full protective order. And I am launching an immediate, high-priority international search for Julian. We are going to find him, Abigail. Wherever he is hiding... we are going to bring him home."
