Chapter 9 - The Final Stand at Maple Ridge

Two weeks before the wedding, a final shadow attempted to creep across the sunlit peace of Maple Ridge.

It was a cold, foggy Thursday night.

The mansion was quiet. Ellie was fast asleep in her nursery, guarded by Marcus’s security team on the lower grounds. Daniel had been called to an emergency board meeting downtown regarding the final acquisition of the shelter property, leaving Maria alone in the grand library, reading by the warm light of the fireplace.

Outside, the wind howled through the maple trees, rattling the windowpanes.

Suddenly, the glass doors leading to the dark rear terrace clicked open.

Maria froze. She stood up from the armchair, picking up a heavy brass letter opener from the desk. “Who’s there?”

A figure stepped out from behind the heavy velvet curtains into the firelight.

It was Vanessa Cole.

She looked unrecognizable. Her hair was messy and unwashed, her expensive coat stained with mud at the hem, and her eyes wild, bloodshot, and unhinged. In her right hand, she held a small glass bottle filled with clear fluid.

Maria’s heart hammered against her ribs, but she didn't scream. She stood her ground, holding the brass letter opener steady.

“Vanessa,” Maria said, her voice remarkably calm. “How did you get past the gates?”

“The old servant entrance behind the greenhouse,” Vanessa sneered, her voice raspy and hollow. “The lock was rusted. I used to live here, remember? I know every inch of this pathetic house.”

She stepped closer, the smell of cheap alcohol and rain clinging to her.

“Look at you,” Vanessa spat, her gaze lingering on the glowing yellow diamond engagement ring on Maria’s finger. “Sitting in his library. Wearing his mother’s ring. Living like a queen while my father rots in a prison cell and my mother begs for money from relatives!”

“Your father stole millions from homeless children, Vanessa,” Maria said coldly. “He put himself in that cell. And you brought this on yourself the moment you decided to hurt a three-year-old child.”

Vanessa let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. She raised the glass bottle in her hand.

“Do you know what this is, Maria?” Vanessa whispered maliciously. “It’s industrial acid. One splash... just one splash across that pretty face of yours, and let’s see if Daniel still wants to put his mother’s ring on a maid!”

She lunged forward, raising the bottle to throw the fluid.

Maria didn't cower. She dodged to the left, slamming her heavy leather armchair into Vanessa’s knees.

Vanessa stumbled, yelling in rage as the glass bottle flew from her hand, shattering against the stone fireplace. The acid hissed violently as it hit the hot coals, sending up a plume of acrid white smoke.

Vanessa scrambled to her feet, her hands reaching for Maria’s throat. “I’ll kill you! I’ll burn this whole place down!”

Before Vanessa’s hands could touch Maria, the double library doors were kicked open with a thunderous crack.

Daniel stormed into the room, flanked by Marcus and two armed security guards.

Daniel didn't wait for Marcus. He lunged across the room, grabbed Vanessa by her coat collar, and slammed her against the oak bookshelf, pulling her completely away from Maria.

“Get your hands off her!” Daniel roared, his voice echoing like thunder through the mansion.

Marcus quickly stepped in, pinning Vanessa’s arms behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

Vanessa thrashing uselessly in Marcus’s grip, screaming incoherently as she was dragged toward the door. “She stole everything from me! She’s just a maid! She’s nobody!”

Daniel didn't give Vanessa another second of his attention. He turned and pulled Maria into his arms, checking her face and hands with frantic, trembling fingers.

“Are you hurt?! Did she touch you?!” Daniel gasped, his chest heaving with terror.

“I’m okay, Daniel,” Maria whispered, resting her head against his chest, feeling the wild, rapid pounding of his heart. “I’m okay. The acid hit the fireplace.”

May you like

Daniel buried his face in her hair, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe.

“It’s over, Maria,” Daniel whispered, his voice shaking with fierce devotion. “She’s going to prison for a very long time. Nobody will ever threaten you again.”
