Chapter 3 - The Sealed Confession

By midnight, Matteo had finally fallen into a deep, natural sleep—the first peaceful rest he had experienced since the doctors handed down his death sentence. His breathing was deeper, more regular, free of the rattling wheeze that had haunted my nights.
I stood in my private study on the third floor of the Moretti estate, the heavy mahogany door locked from the inside. The room was dark, illuminated only by the amber glow of the Chicago streetlights filtering through bulletproof glass.
On the massive oak desk lay the envelope Elena had given to Matteo.
The cream-colored parchment bore the faint, unmistakable scent of lavender and vanilla—Sofia’s scent. Across the front, written in her elegant, flowing cursive, were the words: For Matteo—open only when Luca has lost all hope.
My hands trembled—a foreign sensation for a man who had pulled triggers, signed death warrants, and looked into the eyes of hardened killers without a single flutter of adrenaline.
With a slow, deliberate movement, I slid my finger beneath the wax seal and tore the envelope open.
Inside was a single folded sheet of paper. I unfolded it under the desk lamp and began to read.
My dearest Matteo,
If you are reading this, it means your father has reached the end of his strength. It means he has looked at your little face and realized that all his money, all his power, and all his guns could not stop the darkness from coming for you.
Listen to me carefully, my darling boy. The men who took me from you are not ghosts. They wear tailored suits. They sit at our dinner table. They smile at your father and call him brother.
On the night I died, I discovered that our accounts were being drained and our medical supplies were being systematically poisoned. Not by an enemy syndicate, Luca—if you are reading this over his shoulder, as I know you will be—listen to me. It is Marcus.
The name hit me like a physical punch to the gut.
Marcus.
Marcus Vance. My consigliere. My shadow. The man who had stood by my side for fifteen years, who held my hand when my father died, who managed every detail of my life when I was in the trenches building this empire.
He wants the throne, Luca, Sofia’s letter continued, the handwriting growing slightly more hurried near the bottom. He believes your ruthlessness is fading because of us. He poisoned my tea three weeks before the crash. And when he realized our son inherited my weak heart, he ensured Matteo’s treatments were sabotaged from the very beginning. Elena knows the truth. Trust her. Protect our son.
Always yours, Sofia.
The paper fluttered from my fingers, landing softly on the Persian rug.
Marcus.

For fifteen years, Marcus had been my left hand. He knew every safehouse, every offshore account, every weakness I possessed. And all the while, he had been the architect of my family's destruction.
A cold, lethal silence filled the study. The grief that had paralyzed me for days instantly burned away, incinerated by a rage so pure and concentrated it felt like liquid fire.
