Chapter 8 - A New Dynasty

Three months later.
May had arrived in Chicago, painting the Greystone estate in brilliant shades of emerald green, blooming white magnolias, and golden sunlight.
It was 8:00 p.m.
Inside the grand dining hall, the crystal chandelier cast a warm, sparkling glow over a mahogany table set for three. There was no tension in the air, no whispered anxieties among the staff, no looming specter of betrayal.
Grace sat at the head of the table, wearing an elegant emerald silk dress that matched the color of the spring lawns outside. She was laughing softly as Zoe—now wearing a brand-new pink dress with white lace—chattered excitedly about her latest art project in the estate’s newly converted playroom.
At the other end of the table sat Adrien.
His suit jacket was draped over the back of his chair, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dark tattoos that had once seemed so terrifying to the staff. Now, they were just part of the man who poured fresh lemonade into Zoe’s glass with practiced, effortless care.
“More broccoli, Zoe,” Adrien instructed with a mock-serious expression.
“Only if I get the sparkly blue crayon!” Zoe negotiated instantly, pointing a small fork at him.
“Deal,” Adrien agreed, holding out his hand to shake hers across the table.
Grace watched them, a deep, abiding warmth spreading through her chest. She had spent years believing that survival meant hiding in the shadows, keeping her head down, and praying the world wouldn't notice her existence.
She had never imagined that the most feared man in Chicago would be the one to pull her into the light.
After dinner, as Zoe drifted off to sleep against Adrien’s shoulder while he carried her upstairs to the nursery, Grace walked out onto the grand stone balcony overlooking the lawn. The evening breeze carried the scent of wet earth and blossoming flowers from Lake Michigan.
Footsteps approached softly behind her.
Adrien stepped out onto the balcony, holding two crystal glasses of chilled white wine. He handed one to her, his fingers brushing hers for a fraction of a second.
“She’s finally asleep,” Adrien said quietly, leaning his forearms against the stone balustrade beside her.
“Thank you, Adrien,” Grace said, looking out over the expansive estate where the security lights glowed softly like distant stars. “For everything. For Zoe... for me... for giving us a home.”
Adrien turned his head, his dark eyes fixed on her face, catching the silver moonlight reflecting in her dark hair.
“You didn't just find a home, Grace,” Adrien said, his voice dropping into a register of deep, undeniable sincerity. “You built one. Out of a box of crayons, a pair of ruined shoes, and a little girl who wasn't afraid of the dark.”

Grace smiled, her heart swelling with an emotion she no longer needed to hide. She raised her glass, clinking it gently against his.
The shoes were polished. The traitor was gone. And in the heart of the most powerful empire in Chicago, love had finally taken root, safe and unshakeable under the spring sky.
