Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

Within twenty minutes, Blackwater House was a fortress under siege—not from the outside, but from within.

Adrian had summoned his most trusted guards, sealing every exit, cutting all phone lines to the outside world, and placing the entire household under lockdown. Mr. Vance stood at the foot of the third-floor stairs, his face pale, hands trembling slightly as he realized the magnitude of the betrayal he had been blind to.

Inside Victoria’s room, a team of independent, highly trusted physicians—brought in by Adrian’s private jet from Zurich within the hour—worked frantically over the girl.

Clara stood by the window, watching the rain begin to lash against the glass.

Adrian sat in the rocking chair beside Victoria’s bed, holding his daughter’s thin hand in his massive, scarred palm, kissing her knuckles over and over while tears—silent and heavy—cut tracks down his hardened face.

“She’s going to be okay, sir,” one of the Swiss doctors announced, wiping his hands with a sterile cloth as he stepped away from the bed. “The toxin is a synthetic heavy-metal compound combined with a powerful neuro-blocker. It mimics total paralysis and causes extreme spasticity. But because she’s young, and because the dosage was carefully calibrated just to keep her helpless rather than kill her, we can flush it out of her system. With physical therapy, she will recover full mobility.”

Adrian looked up from his daughter, his eyes red-rimmed, burning with a cold, apocalyptic fury.

“Marcus March,” Adrian whispered, the name sounding like a death sentence.

Downstairs, in the grand ballroom, Marcus March was waiting for the evening board meeting to begin, completely unaware that his trap had been sprung.

“Get him,” Adrian said to Mr. Vance, his voice like grinding stones. “Bring him to the conservatory. And bring Selene, too. I want them both there.”

Clara watched as Adrian stood up, gently kissing Victoria’s forehead. The little girl managed a weak, brave smile, squeezing her father’s thumb.

“Stay with her, Clara,” Adrian told her, his voice softening just a fraction. “When I come back, this house is going to settle its debts.”
