Chapter 6 - The Voice from the Grave

The basement vault beneath the Kade estate was a relic of an older, bloodier era. Soundproofed, reinforced with two feet of reinforced steel, and shielded from electronic surveillance, it was where Weston kept his deepest secrets.
He sat alone at a metal desk under a single overhead bulb, sliding the micro-cassette into an old analog transcription player he kept specifically for secure, unhackable audio logs.
He pressed play.
For a few seconds, there was only static and the heavy sound of wind rushing past a microphone. Then, a man’s voice broke through the speaker—breathing heavily, speaking in a hurried, desperate whisper.
“If you’re listening to this, Weston... it means I didn't make it out of the freight yard. They’re watching every exit. They know I copied the server logs.”
Weston gripped the edge of the metal desk. It was Julian’s voice.
“It wasn't the Marchettis,” Julian’s recorded voice continued, the tension ratcheting up with every word. “At least, not entirely. The bomb used on your family... the high-grade C-4 military ordnance... it didn't come from their black-market contacts. It came from our own northern armory. And the sign-off override... I traced the digital signature to your inner circle, Weston. Someone close to you. Someone who wanted to spark a war so bad they were willing to slaughter your wife and child to do it.”
A loud crash echoed on the tape—the sound of a metal door being forced open in the background.
“They’re here,” Julian whispered, his voice cracking with terror. “I hid the master drive inside Mia’s toy—inside Penny. If Elena finds it... tell my little girl her daddy loved her. And Weston... look at your chief advisor. Look at—!”
The tape cut off with a violent screech of feedback, followed by the sickening crunch of metal and a heavy thud.
Silence descended upon the vault.
Weston sat motionless in the chair, the blood roaring in his ears. The audio had stopped just before the name could be spoken, but the confession was absolute.
It wasn't a war between the Kades and the Marchettis that killed Odalys and Nadia.
It was a coup. An inside job orchestrated by someone sitting at Weston’s right hand every single day.
Slowly, Weston reached into his jacket and pulled out the micro-SD card that had been wrapped alongside the cassette tape. He walked over to the secure offline terminal in the corner of the vault and plugged it into the USB port.
A directory of encrypted files popped up on the monitor.
Weston clicked the first file—a digital surveillance log dated three years ago, exactly forty-eight hours before the car bombing.
The video file loaded.
On the screen, grainy night-vision footage showed the underground parking garage of the Kade estate. A figure in a dark trench coat stood by the back of Weston’s private SUV, carefully planting a magnetic device beneath the passenger floorboard where Odalys usually sat.
The figure turned around, the motion sensor light catching their profile cleanly.
Weston stopped breathing.

The face on the screen wasn't a rival mobster. It wasn't Silas Marchetti.
It was Marcus—his most trusted enforcer, his shadow, the man who had stood by his side for fifteen years.
