Chapter 6 - The Federal Sweep

Before Vanessa could finish her sentence, the heavy oak doors of the primary suite were violently kicked off their hinges with a deafening crash.
Bang!
“FBI! Federal Law Enforcement! Nobody move!”
Half a dozen tactical agents clad in matte-black body armor and carrying automatic rifles swarmed into the bedroom, their tactical flashlights cutting beams through the soft amber lighting.
Vanessa screamed, stumbling backward against her marble vanity as two agents pinned her arms behind her back with brutal, mechanical efficiency, slapping cold steel handcuffs around her wrists.
“What is this?! You can’t do this! Do you know who I am?!” Vanessa shrieked, thrashing against the agents, her perfect makeup smearing as rage distorted her features. “Graham! Tell them to let me go! You’re making a terrible mistake!”
Graham didn’t flinch. He walked over to the nightstand, picked up the crystal cup containing her brewed poison, and handed it directly to a senior federal investigator who had just entered the room.
“Secure that cup as evidence,” Graham instructed calmly. “Chain of custody must be pristine. There’s a hidden compartment in her vanity containing additional unmarked vials of organic mercury and thallium compounds. Her fingerprints and forensic residue will be all over them.”
The lead investigator nodded sharply, taking the cup with a gloved hand and motioning to the forensics team waiting in the hallway.
“Agent Miller, U.S. Department of Justice,” the investigator said, flashing his credentials before looking at Graham with professional sympathy. “We’ve been monitoring suspicious financial wire movements tied to Miss Hale’s offshore accounts for two weeks, but your encrypted recording of this confession gives us everything we need for an immediate federal indictment on charges of attempted premeditated murder, wire fraud, and conspiracy.”
Vanessa stopped struggling. She stared at Graham, her hazel eyes wide with a mixture of sheer disbelief and murderous hatred.
“You recorded me,” she whispered, her voice trembling with cold fury. “You planned this.”
“I’m a software engineer, Vanessa,” Graham replied, turning his back on her as federal agents read her rights and began dragging her toward the shattered doorway. “I always check the system logs before I let a virus crash my network.”
As they hauled her out of the room, her furious screams echoed down the grand hallway, growing fainter until the heavy doors of the estate finally muffled her voice entirely.
Graham walked slowly to the large arched window overlooking the dark, rolling waters of Lake Michigan.
The low, mechanical ringing in his ears was still there. The heavy metals were still in his bloodstream, and he would spend the next several weeks undergoing intense chelation therapy at a specialized medical center to purge the poison from his body.

But as the first pale streaks of dawn began to paint the horizon in shades of gold and rose, Graham took a deep, clear breath.
For the first time in months, the world around him felt wonderfully, beautifully quiet.
