Chapter 4 - THE MEDICAL & LEGAL INTERVENTION

By 2:00 a.m., the master suite of the Aspen mansion looked less like a bedroom and more like a triage unit combined with a command center.

The four girls were fast asleep in the giant king-sized bed, buried beneath layers of goose-down blankets, their bellies full of warm pancakes and fresh fruit, their breathing deep and peaceful for the first time in six months.

In the adjoining private study, the door was firmly shut.

Sitting across from Nathan at the mahogany desk was Dr. Aris Thorne, a trusted family pediatrician who had flown in from Denver via private helicopter at Nathan’s urgent midnight request, alongside Marcus Vance, head of Nathan’s corporate security and legal intelligence division.

Dr. Thorne closed his medical chart, his expression grim and tight with professional fury.

“I’ve documented everything, Nathan,” Dr. Thorne said quietly, setting his stethoscope on the desk. “All four girls are showing classic signs of chronic caloric restriction and mild malnutrition. Their weight curves have dropped significantly over the last four months—a sharp deviation from the healthy trajectories I recorded during my last checkup in August. Furthermore, there are minor bruising patterns on Lily and Emma’s upper arms consistent with forceful grip restraint.”

Nathan sat in his leather chair, staring down at his hands clasped tightly together. His knuckles were bone-white.

“How long?” Nathan asked, his voice barely above a whisper. “How long could this have gone on before…”

“Before irreversible organ damage or developmental stunting?” Dr. Thorne finished the sentence without hesitation. “Another two months, Nathan. Maybe three. Children at age five require specific nutritional intake for cognitive and skeletal development. Depriving them of adequate food while subjecting them to psychological intimidation—telling them they’re getting ‘chubby’—is textbook psychological and physical abuse.”

Dr. Thorne packed his bag, stood up, and placed a reassuring hand on Nathan’s shoulder. “They’ll recover physically now that you’re home and proper nutrition has been restored. But the emotional trauma... that’s going to take years of specialized therapy.”

“Thank you, Aris,” Nathan said stiffly. “Marcus will escort you down to the helipad.”

Once the doctor left, Marcus Vance stepped forward, sliding a thick manila folder and a high-end tablet across the desk.

“You wanted the digital audit of the estate over the last six months, boss?” Marcus said, his voice flat and professional. “I pulled it from the master security and smart-home server before the local network auto-archives.”

Nathan opened the folder. Inside were printed logs, timestamped video stills, and audio transcripts extracted from the smart speakers placed throughout the house.

“Look at page four,” Marcus instructed, tapping the paper.

Nathan’s eyes scanned the text.

It was a transcript of an audio recording taken three weeks ago in the west hallway. “Stop crying or I’ll lock you in the basement with the old dog crates,” Vanessa’s voice echoed coldly through the transcript. “Your father doesn't care about you. He cares about his stock prices. If he loved you, he’d be here instead of Tokyo. So eat your dry toast and shut up.”

Another page detailed financial records.

“She didn't just neglect them, boss,” Marcus continued, his tone hardening. “While you were wiring funds specifically earmarked for the girls’ private tutors, organic meal prep, and winter wardrobe, Vanessa was redirecting eighty percent of those funds into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands under a shell company named V-Corp Holdings. She was using your money to buy high-end jewelry in Zurich and fund her lifestyle with her Aspen socialite friends.”

Nathan slowly closed the folder.

He leaned back in his chair, staring up at the ceiling. The fury that had burned inside him earlier had evolved into something much colder, much heavier, and infinitely more dangerous.

“She mentioned our prenuptial agreement tonight,” Nathan murmured. “She thinks Clause 14 protects her financial settlement in the event of separation.”

A faint, grim smile touched the corners of Marcus’s mouth.

“Clause 14 explicitly states that the financial settlement is void in the event of gross breach of fiduciary duty, financial embezzlement, felony child endangerment, or criminal negligence resulting in direct harm to the beneficiaries of the estate,” Marcus recited from memory. “Our legal team drafted that agreement ourselves six years ago, boss. She never read past the headline numbers.”

Nathan stood up, walking over to the window that looked out over the snowy Aspen peaks.

“Call District Attorney Harrison,” Nathan instructed quietly. “And wake up our lead corporate litigator in New York. Tell them to prepare an emergency warrant for asset freezing, a criminal indictment for felony child endangerment and financial fraud, and a restraining order that keeps Vanessa within a hundred miles of this county.”

“When do you want to drop the hammer?” Marcus asked.

“Dawn,” Nathan said. “Let her sleep in the guest wing tonight. Let her dream about her ten million dollars. Because when the sun comes up on Christmas morning, she’s going to wake up in a nightmare.”
