Chapter 10 - A New Chapter of Healing

Six months later, the autumn air was crisp and bright, carrying the sweet scent of burning leaves and apple cider.

I stood on the front lawn of a charming suburban home three towns over, watching a scene that still brought a quiet tear to my eye every time I thought about it.

Across the emerald-green grass, an eight-year-old boy with a bright red baseball cap and a slight stiffness in his right arm was laughing hysterically as a massive golden retriever bounded across the yard, chasing a bright yellow tennis ball.

Leo threw the ball with his left hand, cheering as the dog scrambled after it.

His foster parents stood on the porch, holding mugs of coffee and smiling as they watched him play—a normal, healthy, happy kid doing normal, healthy, happy kid things.

My phone buzzed in my coat pocket. I pulled it out and glanced at the screen—it was a text from Marcus reminding me of our shift starting in an hour at the ER.

I typed back a quick reply: On my way.

Before turning back to my car, I paused for one last moment, looking across the lawn at Leo. He stopped playing for a second, turned toward the driveway where my car was parked, and waved enthusiastically with both arms, a wide, gap-toothed grin lighting up his face.

May you like

I raised my hand and waved back.

The ghosts of the past will always walk the halls of an emergency room, whispering reminders of the cases we lost and the warnings we ignored. But sometimes, if you fight hard enough, you get to witness a miracle. You get to see a child step out of the shadows and into the sunlight where they belonged all along.
