Chapter 9 - The Trap in Apartment 4B

The kitchen of the hunting cabin was a disaster zone—shattered glass, overturned chairs, and empty liquor bottles scattered across the floorboards.
Robert Vance stood in the center of the room, a heavy hunting rifle clutched in his hands, his eyes wild and bloodshot. Tied tightly to a wooden wooden chair near the stone fireplace was Sarah Miller, her face bruised, her wrists bound with duct tape, tears cutting clean streaks through the dirt and grime on her cheeks.
When the door flew open, Robert spun around, swinging the barrel of the rifle toward Rachel.
“Drop the weapon! Police!” Rachel screamed, holding her service pistol dead-center on his chest, her stance locked and immovable.
“Get out!” Robert roared, spittle flying from his lips as he tightened his finger against the trigger. “This is a family matter! You have no right—!”
Before Robert could shoulder the rifle, a heavy flash-bang grenade thrown by the state tactical team through the front window detonated with a blinding white flash and a deafening, concussive CRACK.
The room filled with thick, disorienting smoke.
Robert screamed, dropping the rifle as he staggered backward, clutching his ears and stumbling blind against the stone hearth.
Within a fraction of a second, three tactical officers swarmed into the cabin, tackling Robert to the floor and slamming steel handcuffs onto his wrists with brutal efficiency.
“Clear! Suspect secured!” an officer shouted through the smoke.
Rachel didn't look at Robert. She holstered her weapon instantly, sprinting across the room to Sarah’s side. She pulled a pocket knife from her belt, slicing through the thick duct tape binding Sarah’s wrists and ankles.
Sarah slumped forward, gasping for air, her body trembling uncontrollably.
“You’re safe,” Rachel said softly, wrapping her tactical jacket around Sarah’s shivering shoulders. “You’re safe, Sarah. The kids are okay. They’re at the hospital, safe and warm.”
Sarah looked up, her tear-filled eyes wide with absolute disbelief. “My... my babies? Lily and Leo... they’re really okay?”

“Lily called 911,” Rachel smiled, tears pricking her own eyes. “She saved her brother's life. And she waited for you, just like you told her to.”
Sarah buried her face in her hands, letting out a long, ragged sob of pure, unadulterated relief as the nightmare finally came to an end.
