Chapter 5 - The Shadow Network

Daniel stood in the dimly lit stairwell of Saint Jude’s Hospital, his phone pressed hard against his ear.

"You can't let him walk, Chief!" Daniel snapped, his usual strict adherence to chain-of-command crumbling under the weight of what he had just learned. "He didn't just endanger those girls! He poisoned Olivia with an unreleased neuro-sedative to cover up a homicide!"

Chief Robert Harris’s sigh came through the speaker heavy and exhausted. "Daniel, listen to me. I hear you, but legally, right now, we have a missing-child report filed by a prominent physician, an alleged accidental ingestion of a trial drug, and a seven-year-old’s statement that hasn't been taken by an accredited forensic interviewer yet."

"I have the syringe, Chief! The toxicology matches!"

"And his defense team is already arguing that the syringe was retrieved from a shoe without a unbroken chain-of-custody, claiming the child picked it up from a medical waste bin at his clinic!" Harris said grimly. "Judge Vance signed a $250,000 bond order ten minutes ago. Carter is stepping out of precinct doors right now."

Daniel slammed his fist against the concrete wall of the stairwell. "Vance signed it? Dr. Julian Vance’s brother is Circuit Judge Arthur Vance! It’s a closed loop, Chief! They're protecting him!"

"Which is why we have to play this chess game perfectly," Harris warned. "If you go rogue on this, Daniel, every piece of evidence you collected at that desk becomes fruit of the poisonous tree. Get back to the station. We’re bringing in the State Police Major Crimes Unit and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation Task Force. If there’s a body under that house, we need a search warrant that no crooked judge can throw out."

Daniel took a deep breath, forcing his heart rate back down. "Understood, Chief. I’m heading back."

Twenty minutes later, Daniel pulled his personal cruiser into the rear lot of the Carter estate in the affluent suburb of Oakridge.

The storm had worsened. Rain poured off the steep slate roof of the three-story Tudor mansion, cascading into dark flowerbeds below. The house was pitch black, set back from the main road behind a high wrought-iron fence and a wall of dense pine trees.

Daniel parked across the street under the shadow of an oak tree, keeping his headlights off. He wasn't executing a search—he knew better than to ruin the case. He was establishing surveillance. If Michael Carter returned home to destroy evidence before the federal warrant was executed, Daniel needed to be there to record it.

At 11:42 p.m., a silver Mercedes sedan turned into the long driveway, its headlights cutting through the heavy downpour.

The vehicle stopped near the three-car garage.

The driver’s door opened, and Dr. Michael Carter stepped out, now wearing a dark raincoat over his suit. He didn't head for the front door. Instead, he walked straight toward the side entrance of the detached garage, pulling a heavy set of brass keys from his pocket.

Daniel pulled up his high-powered digital camera, aiming the telephoto lens through his rain-beaded windshield. The shutter clicked silently in rapid succession.

Michael unlocked the garage side door and stepped inside. A moment later, a dim yellow light flickered on from an interior window facing the back garden.

Through the telephoto lens, Daniel watched Michael move across the garage floor. He grabbed a heavy metal crowbar, a pair of industrial rubber gloves, and two large plastic storage drums from a workbench.

Then, Michael knelt near the rear corner of the garage floor, pulled back a rubber floor mat, and inserted a long iron key into a steel hatch set flush into the concrete.

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

The iron key. The little room under the garage.

Emma hadn't been imagining it. Olivia hadn't dreamed it.

Michael was preparing to move Elena Carter’s remains before the police arrived with a warrant.

Daniel grabbed his radio, switching to the emergency tactical channel. "Dispatch, this is Officer Reed! I am at the Carter residence. I have eyes on the suspect actively attempting to tamper with and destroy evidence of a clandestine grave site in the garage! I need immediate backup and an emergency exigent-circumstances entry authorization!"

"Officer Reed, hold your position!" Dispatch responded. "State Police units are six minutes out!"

May you like

Six minutes was too long. Daniel watched through the lens as Michael pulled open the heavy steel hatch, revealing a dark stone staircase leading down into the earth.

Michael picked up a jug of industrial acid and stepped down into the shadows.
