Chapter 5 - The Arraignment and the Fallout

The courtroom of the municipal district court was cool, echoing with the low murmur of lawyers, bailiffs, and reporters.
It was 9:00 AM on a Tuesday, yet the gallery was surprisingly full. Word of the prominent city planning commissioner’s daughter being arrested for a violent child assault had leaked to the local press.
I sat in the front row, my hand resting gently on Ruby’s shoulder. She wore dark sunglasses to protect her healing eye, her posture small but steady against my side.
Across the aisle, sitting at the defense table, was Vanessa.
She looked pale, her hair pulled back into a messy bun, wearing an oversized gray jumpsuit that swallowed her frame. She refused to look in our direction, keeping her eyes fixed on the mahogany table in front of her.
Behind her sat my father. He looked ten years older than he had twenty-four hours ago. His shoulders were slumped, his expensive suit looking slightly wrinkled, his gaze fixed on the floor. My mother was absent—still being held pending her arraignment for witness tampering.
The bailiff’s voice rang out sharp and clear. "All rise for the Honorable Judge Elizabeth Vance—no relation—presiding."
Judge Vance adjusted her glasses, scanning the paperwork on her desk before looking up at the defense and prosecution tables.
"We are here for the arraignment of State versus Vanessa Vance," the judge announced, her voice crisp and commanding. "Charges include aggravated second-degree assault, child endangerment, and witness intimidation. How does the defendant plead?"
Henderson stood up immediately, buttoning his suit jacket. "Not guilty, Your Honor. Furthermore, the defense moves for dismissal based on lack of substantive physical intent and mitigating domestic circumstances—"
"Mr. Henderson," Judge Vance interrupted, her tone dropping any pretense of patience. "I have reviewed the preliminary police package. I have listened to the smart-home audio recording where your client explicitly acknowledges the victim and executes a high-velocity impact against a hard surface. I have the medical report confirming permanent visual impairment to a six-year-old child. And I have the text message threatening the primary witness."
Henderson swallowed hard, his confident demeanor faltering slightly. "Your Honor, we request bail—"
"Bail is denied," Judge Vance said flatly, striking her gavel once. The sound cracked through the courtroom like a gunshot. "Given the severity of the injuries, the active threat to witnesses, and the defendant's clear disregard for judicial process, the defendant is remanded to the county detention center without bond pending trial."
A sharp gasp escaped Vanessa’s lips. She half-rose from her chair, looking frantically toward the gallery. "Dad! Dad, do something! You can't let them do this!"
My father didn't move. He didn't look up. He sat motionless in the wooden bench, a broken man who had finally realized that the walls he built to protect his favorite child had completely collapsed on top of him.
Two bailiffs stepped forward, placing their hands firmly on Vanessa’s shoulders and guiding her through the side door toward holding. Her muffled sobs and frantic protests faded down the corridor until the heavy steel door locked shut with a definitive clank.

Judge Vance looked down from the bench, her eyes meeting mine for a brief, sympathetic moment.
"Court is adjourned."
