Chapter 5 - The Mass Exodus and David’s Return

The courtyard erupted into utter, unbridled pandemonium.
Several wealthy family friends and local business partners who had been sipping mimosas a moment ago suddenly found pressing matters to attend to on their smartphones, beating a hasty retreat toward the front gates to distance themselves from a catastrophic financial sinking ship.
Vanessa shrieked—a high-pitched, hysterical sound that belonged in a psychiatric ward—and lunged forward toward the matriarch. "You’re cutting us off? Over a nurse? Over a brat who doesn't even belong in our social circle!"
Before Vanessa’s manicured fingernails could come within a yard of Margaret, two massive, broad-shouldered private security guards—operatives who had been quietly stationed near the service entrance by Arthur Sterling's explicit orders—stepped directly into her path, their arms crossed like slabs of granite.
"Step back, ma'am," the lead guard rumbled, his voice devoid of any human warmth.
Elena did not wait to watch the pathetic spectacle unfold. Scooping Mia tightly into her arms, she turned her back on the wreckage of the patio and walked toward the grand French doors. The Target gift bag containing the dinosaur puzzle still hung safely from her wrist.
As she crossed the threshold into the cool, air-conditioned foyer of the mansion, the heavy oak front door swung wide open.
David Callahan stood in the entryway. He was still wearing his rumpled button-down shirt from his Saturday shift at the regional logistics center—a gritty, demanding job he maintained entirely by choice, refusing to accept a single cent of tainted Whitmore handout money. He had driven over at breakneck speed after receiving a frantic, broken text message from Elena’s phone.
"Elena? Mia?" David breathed, his chest heaving as he took in his wife's grim expression and his daughter's tear-stained face. "What happened? I saw security guards at the main gates and people running out to their cars. What is going on out there?"

Mia buried her face deep into the crook of her father’s neck the instant she heard his voice. "Daddy... they put me by the trash. They said mommy's a lowly nurse."
David froze. The color instantly vanished from his tanned face, replaced by a dark, terrifying, cold fury that Elena had never witnessed in her husband in all their years together. He took Mia gently from Elena’s arms, whispering, "Hold her close," and turned on his heel, marching straight back out onto the sunlit patio.
