Chapter 6 - The Betrayal at the Gala

Two weeks later, the war that had been brewing in the shadows moved into the glaring light of high society.
Don Hector Vance had called for a formal summit of the Western Syndicate leaders. The meeting was disguised as an elite charity gala held at the historic Beverly Wilshire Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
Every major criminal family, corrupt politician, and dark financier on the West Coast would be present.
"It is a trap, Boss," Dario, Ricardo's chief of security, warned as they stood in the estate study. "Vance knows he failed at the canyon. He wants to draw you out onto neutral ground where he can humiliate you publicly or force a vote to strip your territorial rights."
"I know," Ricardo said smoothly, adjusting the silver cufflinks on his black tuxedo jacket. "Which is why I am not going alone."
In the grand master bedroom suite, Elena stood before a full-length mirror, feeling like an imposter in a fairy tale.
The quadruplets had spent the entire afternoon helping her prepare. Valentina had chosen a breathtaking floor-length gown of deep emerald velvet that clung to Elena's slender frame and made her pale green eyes pop. Leo had sourced a vintage diamond necklace from the family vault. Mateo had insisted she wear her hair up, while Dante stood guard outside her door like a little soldier.
A gentle knock sounded, and the four children stepped into the room.
Valentina gasped, clasping her hands to her mouth. "Elena... you look like a queen."
"She looks like Dad's girl," Mateo corrected with a smirk, though his eyes held genuine admiration.
"Don't lose the necklace," Leo added, checking his watch. "It's worth two million dollars and insured through a shell company in Zurich."
Elena laughed softly, kneeling down in her long velvet dress to gather all four of them into a tight embrace. "Thank you, guys. I'll be back before midnight."
"Keep Dad safe," Dante said seriously, looking her in the eye. "He gets reckless when he thinks he's the biggest predator in the room."
"I will," Elena promised.
Downstairs in the foyer, Ricardo stood waiting. When he heard the rustle of velvet on the marble stairs, he turned.
His breathing stopped.
Elena descended the stairs slowly, the green velvet cascading around her feet, the diamonds glittering under the chandelier light.
Ricardo walked to the base of the stairs and offered his hand. When she placed her gloved hand in his, he lifted it to his lips and pressed a soft, lingering kiss against her skin.
"You are going to blind them all tonight, mi amor," he whispered softly.
An hour later, their dark armored limousine pulled up to the valet entrance of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Paparazzi flashes exploded like lightning as security guards held back the crowds.
Ricardo stepped out first, tall, imposing, and radiant with terrifying power. He turned and offered his arm to Elena, guiding her into the grand ballroom.
The room was a sea of crystal chandeliers, champagne towers, and men in dark suits accompanied by women dripping in diamonds.
As Ricardo and Elena entered, a heavy silence swept across the ballroom like a wave. Whispers rippled through the crowd.
Is that Flores? Who is the woman? Where did she come from?
At the center of the room, standing beside a private bar, stood Don Hector Vance.
Vance was an older man, sixties, with thin white hair, cold black eyes, and a sharp, cruel face. Beside him stood two heavy bodyguards and a sleek, corrupt district attorney from Los Angeles County.
Vance watched Ricardo approach, his eyes sliding over Elena with a oily, patronizing sneer.
"Ricardo," Vance rasped, holding out a glass of scotch. "I was beginning to think you were too afraid to leave your mountain fortress."
"I don't hide from old men who send mercenaries to do a soldier's job, Hector," Ricardo replied, his voice calm, clear, and loud enough to carry to the surrounding tables.
Vance’s jaw twitched. He turned his dark gaze to Elena. "And who is this charming creature? A new distraction? Or another nanny meant to replace the wife you failed to protect three years ago?"
The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees. Several guests nearby hastily backed away.
Ricardo’s hand tightened around the stem of his champagne glass until the glass cracked.
Elena felt the surge of murderous fury radiating from Ricardo, but she did not flinch. Instead, she took a step forward, placing herself slightly between Ricardo and Vance, looking the old mob boss dead in the eye.
"My name is Elena Castillo, Mr. Vance," she said, her voice dropping into a smooth, icy register that stunned the surrounding crowd. "And unlike you, Ricardo doesn't need to hide behind cheap insults to prove he owns this room."
Vance’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom. "You have a sharp tongue, girl. Be careful it doesn't get cut out."
"Touch her," Ricardo growled, stepping up beside Elena, his frame looming over Vance like an impending thunderstorm, "and I will tear your syndicate down to the foundation before the sun rises tomorrow."
Vance sneered, leaning in close so only they could hear. "Enjoy your little night of music and velvet, Flores. Because tonight... your canyon burns for real."

Before Ricardo could react, Leo’s encrypted radio frequency buzzed violently inside Ricardo’s hidden earpiece.
“Dad!” Leo’s panicked voice crackled through the comms. “They cut the main gate power! Vance’s secondary strike team just blew the lower perimeter doors! They’re inside the house!”
