Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Agnes

The preliminary family court hearing was scheduled for Friday at 9:00 a.m.
When I walked into courtroom 4B holding Lily’s small hand—she was wearing her favorite yellow dress, happily coloring in a Disney book while sitting beside my father—the atmosphere was tense.
Julian sat at the opposing defense table. He looked hollowed out. The custom black tuxedo from the night of the investment dinner was gone, replaced by an ill-fitting charcoal suit that hung loosely on his frame. His hair was uncombed, and dark, exhausted rings bruised the skin beneath his eyes.
Sitting right beside him was Agnes.
She wasn't wearing diamonds today. She wore a severe black trench coat, her face pinched into an expression of bitter, unyielding martyrdom. She clearly believed that her presence alone would sway the judge, reminding the court of the "sterling" reputation of the Mercer-Sterling alliance.
Judge Holloway—a sharp-eyed woman with silver hair and a reputation for absolute zero tolerance—strode into the room.
“Be seated,” she commanded.
The clerk rattled off the docket numbers. “Case number 2026-CV-8841: Sterling versus Sterling—Emergency Custody and Protective Injunction.”
Julian’s high-priced attorney sprang to his feet first, adjusting his tie with theatrical flourish.
“Your Honor, my client is a pillar of the community, a devastated father who has been unlawfully separated from his five-year-old daughter by an estranged spouse waging a bitter, vindictive corporate war,” the lawyer declaimed, pointing a dramatic finger in my direction. “Mrs. Sterling has weaponized false allegations of domestic disputes to seize marital property and alienate a loving father from his child—”
“Counsel,” Judge Holloway interrupted, her voice cutting through the courtroom like a dry ice wind. “Sit down.”
The lawyer blinked, stunned. “Your Honor?”
“I said, sit down,” the judge repeated, opening a thick manila folder on her desk. “Before you waste this court’s time with melodramatic speeches about fatherly devotion, let us review what has actually been entered into the evidentiary record.”
Judge Holloway pulled out a set of glossy color photographs.
“Exhibit A: ER triage photographs of Mrs. Sterling’s face, taken on the night of June 14th, documenting a severe contusion and laceration to the lip caused by a closed-fist strike. Exhibit B: Forensic audio transcripts from the Mercer Manor ballroom security system, capturing Mr. Sterling explicitly threatening physical and financial ruin if his wife sought emergency medical care for their dying child.”
Agnes stiffened, leaning over to whisper urgently into Julian’s ear.
Judge Holloway looked up from the folder, her gaze locking directly onto Julian and his mother.
“Furthermore,” the judge continued, “this court has received official notification from the economic crimes division that Mr. Sterling was formally indicted yesterday on three counts of felony forgery, wire fraud, and grand larceny regarding the fraudulent mortgage of trust assets.”
The courtroom erupted into a flurry of whispers.
Julian’s lawyer turned pale, staring at his client in absolute horror. “You didn't tell me about indictments!”
Julian panicked. The thin veneer of his composure shattered completely. He jumped to his feet, pointing a shaking finger at Agnes.
“It wasn't just me!” Julian shrieked, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. “She told me to do it! My mother said the trust loopholes would never be checked! She orchestrated the mortgage application! She told me to forge Evelyn’s signature!”
Agnes gasped, throwing her hands up in theatrical betrayal. “Julian! How dare you! You ungrateful, pathetic boy! I raised you, I gave you everything, and now you try to throw your own mother under the bus to save your skin?!”
“Shut up, Mother! You wanted the money just as bad as I did!” Julian screamed, lunging across the table as if he wanted to throttle her.
Bailiffs moved with lightning speed. Two massive officers tackled Julian backward into his chair, pinning his arms behind his back, while another guard stepped between him and Agnes.
Judge Holloway didn't even flinch. She picked up her heavy wooden gavel and brought it down once with a deafening CRACK.
“Silence in my courtroom!” she roared.
The room instantly went dead silent, save for Julian’s ragged, sobbing breaths and Agnes’s indignant, trembling sniffling.
Judge Holloway leaned forward, resting her forearms on the bench, staring down at the mother and son with utter, undisguised contempt.
“Mr. Sterling, your emergency petition for custody is denied with prejudice,” Judge Holloway ruled coldly. “Furthermore, a permanent restraining order is hereby issued, granting sole physical and legal custody of the minor child to Evelyn Mercer, prohibiting you from coming within one thousand yards of either of them. If you attempt contact again, you will spend your pending trial locked in maximum security without bail.”
She turned her gaze to Agnes.
“And as for you, Mrs. Sterling—your residency rights at Mercer Manor were legally terminated forty-eight hours ago. If the sheriff finds you on that property again, you will be arrested for criminal trespass.”

Judge Holloway banged her gavel one final time.
“Court is adjourned.”
