Chapter 6 - The Breach at Sub-Level Three

Upstairs, the heavy steel security doors separating Sub-Level Three from the rest of the hospital didn't just open—they blew inward in a massive shower of sparks, smoke, and shattered titanium bolts.

BOOM!

William Carter strode through the swirling smoke, his suit jacket torn, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, leading a heavily armed team of federal marshals and local SWAT officers. Behind him walked Sarah Jenkins, clutching a high-tech decryption tablet, her fingers flying across the screen as she disabled the facility's local firewalls one by one.

“Clear the corridor!” shouted the lead SWAT commander, his tactical rifle raised as he swept the hallway. “Move, move, move!”

The resistance from hospital security was fierce but short-lived. Carter Holdings’ elite guards—men trained to handle corporate espionage and black-ops extractions—were completely unprepared to face federal law enforcement backed by an enraged billionaire CEO who had nothing left to lose.

Within three minutes, the hallway leading to the primary elevator shaft of Sub-Level B-4 was secured.

William stopped in front of the massive, reinforced hydraulic vault door that led directly down into Arthur’s subterranean lab.

“Sarah, can you override the lock?” William demanded, his chest heaving as he stared at the thick keypad flashing a warning red light: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED - LOCKDOWN ENGAGED.

“Give me ten seconds, William,” Sarah said, kneeling down beside the control panel and plugging a direct fiber-optic tap into the system port.

She tapped a final sequence of commands on her tablet.

DECRYPTION SUCCESSFUL. WELCOME, ADMINISTRATOR CARTER.

With a deep, mechanical groan, the massive hydraulic bolts began to retract. The vault door slowly swung open, revealing the smoke-hazed, terrifying interior of Sub-Level B-4, where my screams were still echoing off the concrete walls.

William didn't wait for the SWAT team to lead the way.

As soon as the gap in the door was wide enough, he charged straight through into the lab, his eyes sweeping the vast circular room until they locked onto the carbon-fiber chair where I was being systematically electrocuted by Arthur’s automated machinery.

“ETHAN!” William roared, a sound of pure, unadulterated primal fury.

He didn't look at Arthur, who was standing at the glass console. He didn't look at the guards scrambling to raise their weapons. William grabbed a heavy steel wrench dropped by a fleeing technician and hurled it across the room with all his might, shattering the main power conduit console into a shower of white-hot sparks.

The mechanical arm above me whined, sparked violently, and went completely limp, dropping away from my chest with a heavy thud.

The high-voltage current cut off instantly.

My head slumped forward, my body trembling uncontrollably as the leather restraints automatically released, letting me collapse heavily onto the cold concrete floor.

“Ethan!”

Grandpa Walter was by my side in a second, his own restraints having been blown open by the power surge. He gathered me into his arms, pulling my head into his chest as I coughed weakly, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the floor.

“I’ve got you, boy... I’ve got you,” Walter whispered, tears streaming down his weathered cheeks.

Across the room, Arthur Carter stood amidst the smoking ruins of his control console, his face twisted in a mask of furious, venomous rage. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a heavy-caliber silver revolver, and pointed it straight at William’s chest.

“You ruin everything, William!” Arthur shrieked, his voice cracking with senile madness. “You always were a weak, sentimental failure! That boy is worth more than all the hospitals on this continent combined, and you’re throwing away human immortality for a street rat!”

William didn't flinch. He stood tall in the center of the lab, staring down his own father with cold, absolute contempt.

“You didn't build an empire, Father,” William said quietly, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. “You built a slaughterhouse. And your shift is over.”

Before Arthur could pull the trigger, the lead SWAT commander stepped out from the shadows behind him, raising a heavy-duty taser rifle.

THWIP-ZAP!

The barbed probes struck Arthur squarely in the back.

The billionaire founder of Carter Holdings let out a choked gasp, dropped his revolver to the floor, and stiffened like a board before collapsing face-first onto the polished concrete.

Smoke drifted lazily from the shattered server racks. The alarms overhead slowly wound down, replaced by the quiet, steady hum of the emergency generators.

It was over.
