Chapter 5 - The Investigation and the Trap

Detective Jack Vance was a man who looked like he had spent thirty years eating cold turkey sandwiches in the back of an unmarked cruiser. He had a graying crew cut, weathered skin, and eyes that missed nothing. He stepped into Michael’s expansive study, shook Michael’s hand with a grip like a vice, and immediately set a thick manila folder on the edge of the glass desk.

“Dr. Rivers,” Vance said, taking a seat without waiting for an invitation. “Dispatch logged your call at 11:42 p.m. regarding an intrusion and an assault at this residence, followed by an emergency report concerning three missing or endangered minors, and a domestic violence incident at an address down on Pine Ridge Road.”

“That’s correct,” Michael said, pulling out the bloodstained note and the titanium flash drive he had recovered from Jason’s house. Wait—not Jason’s house. Emily’s house. “Detective, my sister is dead.”

Vance’s eyebrows shot up. “Dead? The report from the sheriff’s deputies who went out to Pine Ridge Road this morning said Mrs. Salter was injured, but—cones and tape were up—she was transported to St. Jude’s General just an hour ago. She’s alive, Dr. Rivers.”

Michael froze. The breath caught in his throat.

“Alive?” Michael whispered, the word tasting like a miracle. “She’s alive?”

“Conscious? Not quite yet. Severe concussion, hypothermia, and extensive bruising,” Vance corrected, opening his notepad. “Paramedics found her huddled near the kitchen table when they forced entry following your second call. But she’s breathing. Her husband, Jason Salter, isn't so lucky. We found him twenty minutes ago off mile marker 14 on the mountain pass. His truck slid off the ice.”

Michael stared at the detective. “Is he...?”

“Neck broken on impact,” Vance said flatly. “Looks like he was fleeing the scene in a drunken panic after your altercation last night. The roads were glass.”

A strange, hollow silence settled over the room. Jason Salter was gone. The monster who had terrorized his sister, neglected her children, and tried to sell her twin boys to pay off criminal debts was dead in a ditch of his own making.

“Detective,” Michael said slowly, pulling himself together. “You need to know why he was fleeing.”

Michael slid the bloodstained note, the ledger copies, and the flash drive across the desk.

Vance put on a pair of wire-rimmed reading glasses and began to read. As his eyes scanned Emily’s frantic handwriting, the professional boredom on his face vanished, replaced by the grim focus of a veteran investigator.

“Meyer syndicate,” Vance muttered, adjusting his glasses. “Lending out money to low-life gamblers in Reno, then collecting collateral when the tabs come due. We’ve been tracking their front operations in the county for six months, but we couldn't link them to anyone local. If this flash drive contains what I think it does...”

“It contains the bank routing numbers, the transfer receipts, and the names of the local intermediaries Jason was working with,” Michael said. “My sister found out three weeks ago. That’s why she sent the children to me. She knew Jason was going to hand the twins over last night.”

Vance looked up from the papers, his eyes narrowing. “Dr. Rivers, if what you’re saying is correct, your sister isn't just a domestic abuse survivor. She’s a key witness in a major federal human trafficking and organized crime ring. And now that her husband is dead, the men he owed money to aren't going to just let it go.”

Michael felt a cold drop of sweat trace down his spine.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean,” Vance said, standing up and buttoning his jacket, “Jason Salter didn't operate in a vacuum. Those men—the ones he owed—they knew about those children. And if they think the evidence of their operation is sitting in this house with Emily’s kids, they aren't going to wait for a court order.”
