Chapter 4 – The Vault

The fourth impact shook the entire building.

Dust rained from the concrete ceiling of the records vault.

Somewhere upstairs, glass exploded.

Denise screamed.

Frank raised the shotgun instinctively, though he knew it would do little against a coordinated group.

"They're through the front entrance," he said grimly.

Laura checked the heavy steel vault door one more time.

The wheel lock was fully engaged.

Two deadbolts secured.

There was no stronger room in the building.

But it had one weakness.

No easy escape.

Above them...

The man with the silver wolf pin stepped over shattered glass.

The bank lobby was empty.

Abandoned.

One of his men looked around.

"They've disappeared."

"They didn't disappear."

He slowly removed a pair of black leather gloves.

"They're hiding."

Another man approached.

"We've searched the offices."

"Nothing."

"The security cameras?"

The technician plugged a small device into the bank's server.

Seconds later, every security feed appeared on his tablet.

He smiled.

"There."

A grainy camera showed employees rushing into a hallway.

The last image froze on Laura closing a thick steel door.

"The vault."

The silver wolf nodded once.

"Good."

"They've trapped themselves."

Inside the vault...

Caleb was sitting beside a shelf filled with decades-old bank records.

He wasn't crying.

He was listening.

Every distant footstep.

Every vibration.

As if he had learned long ago that survival depended on hearing danger before seeing it.

Laura sat beside him.

"Caleb."

He looked up.

"When was the last time you saw your mom?"

He hugged his backpack tighter.

"This morning."

"What happened?"

"We stopped at the bus station."

He closed his eyes, remembering.

"She gave me breakfast."

"A doughnut."

"She said I had chocolate on my face."

For the first time since arriving at the bank...

He smiled.

Just a little.

"She laughed."

The smile disappeared almost immediately.

"Then she saw someone."

Laura waited.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"But she got scared."

"She told me to run."

"And not look back."

His voice became barely audible.

"I looked back anyway."

Laura's heart sank.

"What did you see?"

Caleb stared at the floor.

"Three men."

"One of them wore the silver wolf."

Miles away...

A black convoy raced toward Ridge Community Bank.

Police motorcycles cleared intersections.

Drivers pulled aside in confusion.

Inside the lead SUV, Richard Vincent stared at an old photograph resting on his lap.

A young woman.

Dark hair.

Bright eyes.

Twenty-three years old.

His daughter.

Evelyn.

Victoria glanced at the picture.

"I've never seen her."

"You weren't working for me then."

Richard gently brushed his thumb across the edge of the photo.

"She loved gardening."

Victoria looked surprised.

Richard almost smiled.

"Everyone assumed she'd inherit my company."

"They were wrong."

"She wanted to teach children."

He looked out the window.

"I spent years building an empire."

"I forgot to ask what made my daughter happy."

Silence filled the vehicle.

Finally he whispered,

"I won't make that mistake with my grandson."

Back inside the bank...

Boom!

Another impact slammed against the vault door.

This one much closer.

Frank frowned.

"They've reached the hallway."

Boom!

Metal groaned.

Denise jumped.

"They can't get through that, can they?"

Frank didn't answer immediately.

Finally he spoke.

"Eventually..."

"They can get through anything."

Outside the vault...

The silver wolf stood examining the reinforced door.

He ran one finger across the steel.

"Old construction."

One of his men nodded.

"Extremely strong."

"How long?"

"Without explosives?"

"Thirty minutes."

The silver wolf smiled.

"Use explosives."

Inside the vault...

Laura's phone vibrated again.

This time the message contained a location pin.

Moving.

Rapidly approaching.

Richard Vincent.

Only six minutes away.

She typed quickly.

They're using explosives.

The reply came almost instantly.

Hold for five minutes.

Five minutes.

Laura looked around.

The employees looked exhausted.

Terrified.

Frank had positioned himself between the vault door and everyone else.

Even Caleb understood what that meant.

Quietly, the boy stood.

He walked over to Frank.

"Mr. Frank?"

Frank looked down.

"Yes, buddy?"

"My mom says heroes usually don't come home."

Frank swallowed.

"Sometimes."

Caleb reached into his backpack.

He pulled out a tiny plastic soldier.

Its green paint was chipped.

One arm was missing.

"My dad gave me this."

"I think..."

"...you should borrow it."

Frank stared at the toy for several seconds.

Then slowly accepted it.

"I'll give it back."

Caleb nodded with complete sincerity.

"I know."

Outside...

A white utility truck turned into the parking lot.

No company logo.

No license plates.

Its rear doors opened.

Two men unloaded military-grade breaching charges.

The silver wolf checked his watch.

"Vincent?"

"Four minutes away."

"Perfect."

He looked toward the highway.

"I want him here."

One of his men looked confused.

"Why?"

The silver wolf's smile disappeared.

"Because he deserves to watch."

The first explosive charge was fixed to the vault door.

Inside, Frank heard the metallic clink.

His expression changed instantly.

He turned to Laura.

"They're not bluffing anymore."

Laura understood.

"Everyone!"

"Against the back wall!"

People scrambled.

Caleb remained standing.

He looked at the vault door.

Almost...sadly.

Then he whispered something Laura barely heard.

"My mom said this would happen."

Laura stared.

"What?"

He reached into the inside pocket of his backpack.

"There was one more thing."

He removed a small brass key attached to a faded blue ribbon.

It looked old.

Older than Caleb himself.

"My mom said..."

"...if bad people ever found me..."

"...give this to Grandpa."

Laura examined the strange key.

There were no markings except one engraved letter.

V.

Before she could ask what it opened—

The world exploded.

The blast slammed into the vault door like a freight train.

The steel bent inward.

Lights burst overhead.

Concrete cracked.

Denise was thrown to the floor.

The emergency lights flickered red.

Smoke poured through the twisted edges of the door.

Then—

A slow metallic creak echoed through the room.

The vault door...

was opening.

And through the widening gap, a calm voice said,

"Step away from the child."

May you like

The man wearing the silver wolf pin smiled as he raised a pistol.

"I've been looking for you, Caleb."
