PART 2: THE SECRET THEY WERE HIDING

Doctors immediately rushed Noah into the emergency department.

Emma was taken to a chair and given water.

The businessman who had helped them stayed nearby.

Something about the little girl bothered him.

Not in a suspicious way.

In a heartbreaking way.

She looked exhausted.

Like someone much older than ten.

Hours later, a doctor finally emerged.

"Noah is stable."

The entire room breathed a sigh of relief.

Emma burst into tears.

The businessman sat beside her.

"Where are your parents?"

Emma stared at the floor.

The answer didn't come immediately.

Finally she spoke.

"My dad died last year."

The businessman nodded quietly.

"And your mother?"

Emma's eyes filled again.

"Mom left."

The lobby became silent.

"When?"

The little girl swallowed hard.

"Three days ago."

The businessman frowned.

"What do you mean she left?"

Emma slowly reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a folded note.

The paper was wrinkled from being opened many times.

A social worker carefully unfolded it.

The note read:

"Emma, I'm sorry. I can't do this anymore. Take care of Noah. You're a strong girl."

Nobody spoke.

The social worker looked horrified.

The businessman clenched his jaw.

A ten-year-old child had been left alone to care for her five-year-old brother.

For three days.

Without food.

Without money.

Without help.

And somehow...

She had managed to keep him alive.

But there was still one question.

How had they ended up at the hospital?

Emma's answer shocked everyone.

"I carried him."

The doctor looked confused.

"From where?"

Emma quietly named an address.

The room froze.

The address was nearly four miles away.

The little girl had carried her brother almost the entire distance.

May you like

Barefoot.

Alone.
