CHAPTER 2: The Signature in the Chart

The contraction finally passed.

Olivia leaned back against the hospital bed, breathing hard.

Sweat covered her forehead.

One hand gripped the bedrail.

The other remained protectively over her stomach.

Around her, nurses continued monitoring the baby.

The steady rhythm of the fetal heartbeat echoed through the delivery room.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Richard Hawthorne stood near the foot of the bed.

His anger remained visible.

But something else had appeared behind it.

Frustration.

Confusion.

And perhaps even fear.

Because despite months of investigating Olivia Bennett, he still lacked the one thing he wanted most.

The truth.

Dr. Michael Reynolds stepped between them.

"Mr. Hawthorne, if you have concerns, you can discuss them later."

Richard didn't move.

"Later isn't good enough."

The doctor's patience was beginning to wear thin.

"This woman is in labor."

"I know exactly what condition she's in."

Richard's voice hardened.

"What I don't know is why she spent months hiding documents connected to my father."

The room fell silent.

Several nurses exchanged uneasy glances.

Now they understood.

At least partially.

This wasn't about the baby.

It wasn't about a relationship.

It was about something much older.

Something far more dangerous.

Olivia closed her eyes.

She looked exhausted.

Not just physically.

Emotionally.

Months of carrying secrets had worn her down.

Another contraction hit.

She gasped.

The monitor beside her accelerated.

Dr. Reynolds immediately focused on the medical equipment.

But as he reached for the patient's chart, something caught his eye.

A folded document protruded from the back section.

Only a small corner was visible.

Yellowed paper.

Old paper.

Not standard hospital paperwork.

The doctor frowned.

"What's this?"

A nearby nurse looked confused.

She stepped closer.

"I've never seen that before."

Carefully, Dr. Reynolds pulled the document free.

The room grew quiet.

Very quiet.

Richard noticed immediately.

His eyes narrowed.

"What is it?"

The doctor didn't answer.

Instead, he examined the first page.

His expression changed.

Then changed again.

The nurse leaned closer.

"That wasn't in the file this morning."

Now everyone was paying attention.

Even Olivia opened her eyes.

The document looked familiar.

Too familiar.

Her heart began racing.

No.

It couldn't be.

She had locked those papers away weeks ago.

Hadn't she?

Dr. Reynolds slowly unfolded the remaining pages.

Each page appeared older than the last.

Some carried official seals.

Others contained handwritten notes.

The final page was thicker.

He turned it over.

Then froze.

Completely froze.

The color drained from his face.

The room seemed to stop breathing.

Richard stepped forward.

"What are you looking at?"

No response.

The doctor continued staring.

As though he couldn't believe what he was seeing.

"Doctor?"

Still nothing.

Finally Dr. Reynolds whispered:

"This changes the entire case."

A chill swept through the room.

Richard snatched the document before anyone could stop him.

His eyes moved quickly across the page.

Then stopped.

And for the first time since entering the hospital, Richard Hawthorne looked terrified.

Because at the bottom of the final page sat a signature.

A signature he knew better than his own.

William Hawthorne.

His father.

The founder of the Hawthorne empire.

The man whose portrait still hung in the headquarters building.

The man whose legacy controlled nearly every aspect of Richard's life.

The man who had been dead for fifteen years.

Richard's hands trembled.

"No."

He read the page again.

Then again.

The words remained unchanged.

The document was a sworn declaration signed and notarized six months before William Hawthorne's death.

And what it contained threatened to destroy everything Richard believed about his family.

The declaration began simply.

"To whomever receives this document..."

Richard swallowed hard.

The room remained silent.

"I acknowledge that many years ago I fathered a child outside my marriage."

His breathing stopped.

Olivia looked away.

Tears filled her eyes.

The doctor slowly sat down.

Even he looked stunned.

Richard continued reading.

"Her name is Sarah Bennett."

Olivia's mother.

The name struck him like a hammer.

"I have supported her privately throughout her life and accept full responsibility for my actions."

The businessman staggered backward.

His father's words blurred before his eyes.

Yet the worst part was still coming.

"If my daughter chooses to reveal this truth after my death, she is entitled to recognition as my child."

The room felt smaller.

Colder.

Unreal.

Richard lowered the paper.

His face had turned pale.

He stared at Olivia.

Suddenly seeing her differently.

Not as an enemy.

Not as a threat.

But as someone connected to him by blood.

Someone who had spent months carrying a burden she never asked for.

Then he noticed another section.

A final attachment.

His pulse quickened.

Attached to the declaration was a sealed financial agreement.

An agreement nobody knew existed.

The document listed trust accounts.

Property holdings.

And one extraordinary instruction.

Upon confirmation of the declaration's authenticity, a portion of William Hawthorne's estate would automatically transfer to Sarah Bennett's surviving descendants.

Including Olivia.

The room erupted.

A nurse gasped.

Another covered her mouth.

Dr. Reynolds looked stunned.

Richard stared at the numbers.

Millions of dollars.

Millions.

Hidden for decades.

Protected through private legal arrangements.

His father had planned everything.

Even after death.

And nobody in the family knew.

Nobody.

Not Richard.

Not his siblings.

Not their attorneys.

No one.

The realization hit him all at once.

His father had never intended for the secret to disappear.

He had intended for the truth to emerge eventually.

And now it had.

In a hospital delivery room.

Of all places.

Another contraction struck Olivia.

A powerful one.

She cried out.

The monitors responded instantly.

Nurses rushed into action.

Dr. Reynolds snapped back into professional mode.

"We need to focus."

The baby was coming.

But before anyone could continue, a voice interrupted from the doorway.

"That's impossible."

Everyone turned.

An elderly man stood there.

Gray suit.

Silver hair.

Sharp eyes.

Richard immediately recognized him.

Arthur Greene.

The Hawthorne family's longtime attorney.

And judging by his expression, he had just heard enough to realize the secret was real.

The old lawyer looked directly at the document.

Then at Olivia.

And finally at Richard.

His face darkened.

Because he knew something nobody else in the room knew.

Something that would make the declaration look insignificant.

Something William Hawthorne had hidden even deeper.

Arthur Greene's voice barely rose above a whisper.

"Richard..."

The businessman looked up.

The attorney swallowed hard.

"Your father didn't hide one child."

The room went completely silent.

"What?"

Arthur looked toward Olivia.

Then at the document.

Then back at Richard.

And the next words left everyone speechless.

May you like

"There were two."
