Chapter 2 - The Mother's Last Secret

Mara Leland pulled a chair up beside Ethan, her eyes fixed on the sleeping form of seven-year-old Sadie. The little girl had finally succumbed to exhaustion, her fingers still loosely curling around the worn metro card.
“Derek Voss is on his way,” Mara whispered, her voice tight with concern. “A call came in through the city intake system ten minutes ago. He claims he’s Emma’s legal father and that Sadie was abducted from his home.”
Ethan felt a muscle twitch in his jaw. “Abducted? She walked three miles through a whiteout blizzard carrying an infant.”
“He has the birth certificate, Ethan,” Mara said softly. “In the eyes of the law, until a judge says otherwise, Derek Voss is Emma’s father. And Claire... Claire never legally named a guardian for Sadie before she died.”
“Why me?” Ethan asked, his voice low and dangerous. “I didn't know Claire Brooks. I’ve never seen these kids before tonight.”
Mara reached into her briefcase and pulled out a manila folder. “Claire worked as a patient access clerk at St. Jude’s Clinic five years ago. Do you remember the audit ColeCare Systems ran when your company was almost ruined by software fraud?”
Ethan froze. Five years ago, his company had been on the brink of bankruptcy after a corrupt partner attempted to steal ColeCare's core patents. An anonymous clerk inside St. Jude’s Clinic had leaked an encrypted file that proved Ethan was innocent and exposed the fraudulent conspiracy.
“Claire was the whistleblower,” Ethan murmured, the realization hitting him like a physical blow.
“She saved your company, Ethan,” Mara said. “And six weeks ago, when she realized she was dying, she discovered something else. Derek Voss wasn't just Emma's father. He was a proxy manager for an off-market medical investment trust. A $10 million life insurance and trust policy was opened in Emma’s name when she was born—funded by an anonymous benefactor.”
Ethan stood up slowly, looking over at Sadie’s small, bruised feet tucked under the hospital blanket.
“Don’t let him sign anything,” Ethan quoted Sadie’s words. “What was he trying to sign?”
“Surrender of guardianship rights to a private medical corporation,” Mara said grimly. “If Derek surrenders Emma to this entity, the trust pays out $10 million directly to him as the signing parent. But Emma would become a ward of an out-of-state facility. And Sadie... Sadie would be thrown into the foster care system.”
Before Ethan could reply, the heavy glass ER doors slid open with a sharp hiss.

A man in a drenched leather jacket walked in, accompanied by a sharp-suited lawyer carrying a briefcase. The man had cold, sunken eyes and an aggressive swagger that filled the quiet lobby.
“Where is my daughter?” Derek Voss demanded loudly, sweeping his gaze across the waiting room until his eyes locked onto Sadie.
