CHAPTER 2: THE LETTER HER MOTHER LEFT BEHIND

For several seconds after Martha spoke, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody seemed capable of understanding the words they had just heard.

"She's your daughter."

The sentence echoed through the grand foyer.

Alexander Hawthorne stared at Martha as though she had spoken another language.

His daughter?

The little girl?

The child clutching a worn teddy bear?

Impossible.

Absolutely impossible.

Yet the certainty in Martha's eyes made denial difficult.

Victoria looked from Martha to Alexander.

Then back to the child.

A cold feeling settled in her stomach.

Because Alexander looked genuinely shocked.

He wasn't pretending.

He wasn't hiding guilt.

He looked like a man whose entire reality had just been shattered.

Slowly, Victoria spoke.

"What does she mean?"

No one answered.

The little girl glanced between the adults.

She sensed tension.

Children always did.

Yet she couldn't understand it.

She only knew the room suddenly felt different.

Dangerous somehow.

Uncertain.

Alexander finally found his voice.

"Martha."

His tone was low.

Controlled.

The kind of voice he used when trying not to lose control.

"Explain."

The elderly caretaker nodded slowly.

She had known this day would come.

She had prayed it wouldn't.

But she had known.

For five years she had carried a secret that never truly belonged to her.

Now it was finally time to set it down.

She looked toward Lily.

The little girl sat quietly on the rug.

Still hugging her teddy bear.

Still unaware that her life had just changed forever.

Then Martha turned back to Alexander.

"Her mother's name was Claire Bennett."

The name hit Alexander like a physical blow.

Claire.

For a moment he forgot where he was.

Forgot Victoria.

Forgot the mansion.

Forgot everything.

Because he remembered Claire instantly.

Ten years earlier.

Before the fortune grew larger.

Before business consumed his life.

Before every decision became a negotiation.

There had been Claire.

She had worked as an architect.

Smart.

Independent.

Fearlessly honest.

The complete opposite of the socialites constantly surrounding him.

Which was exactly why he had fallen in love with her.

For nearly two years they had been inseparable.

Then everything fell apart.

A misunderstanding.

A betrayal.

Or at least what Alexander believed was betrayal.

Someone had shown him photographs.

Documents.

Evidence suggesting Claire had sold confidential information to competitors.

He confronted her.

The argument became explosive.

She denied everything.

Alexander refused to believe her.

And in the end...

he walked away.

Weeks later Claire disappeared.

Completely.

No calls.

No messages.

No explanation.

He never saw her again.

Until now.

Or rather...

until her daughter appeared in his home.

Alexander's face had gone pale.

Victoria immediately noticed.

And suddenly she understood something horrifying.

This wasn't fiction.

This wasn't confusion.

This wasn't a mistake.

Claire had been real.

And so was Lily.

"What happened to her?"

Alexander asked quietly.

The question barely escaped his lips.

Martha's eyes filled with tears.

"She died."

Silence.

Lily lowered her head.

The word still hurt.

Even after years.

Alexander felt as though someone had removed all the air from the room.

Died.

Claire was dead.

The realization struck harder than he expected.

Because somewhere deep inside himself...

he had always assumed there would be another chance.

Another conversation.

Another explanation.

Another opportunity to fix what broke between them.

Now that chance was gone forever.

Victoria stood motionless.

Watching everything unfold.

Feeling increasingly like an outsider.

Because she had planned her future around Alexander.

Planned a wedding.

Planned a life.

Planned a family.

And now a child had appeared.

A child carrying another woman's eyes.

Another woman's smile.

Another woman's history.

Then Martha did something unexpected.

She reached into her handbag.

And removed a sealed envelope.

Old.

Worn.

Yellowed with age.

Alexander immediately recognized the handwriting.

Claire's.

His heart nearly stopped.

"She left this for you."

The room became silent again.

Very carefully, Alexander accepted the envelope.

His fingers shook.

Because suddenly the past wasn't buried anymore.

The past was sitting in front of him.

Waiting to be opened.

Waiting to reveal the truth.

The truth he had spent five years avoiding.

Slowly he unfolded the letter.

The first line alone nearly destroyed him.

Dear Alexander,

If you're reading this, it means I'm gone.

His vision blurred.

He continued.

I know you believe I betrayed you.

I know someone convinced you I sold your company's information.

But I didn't.

Alexander froze.

A painful memory resurfaced.

Claire crying.

Begging him to listen.

Begging him to trust her.

And him refusing.

The letter continued.

The documents were fabricated.

Someone wanted us apart.

I never learned who.

But I learned too late that I was pregnant.

The room stopped breathing.

Victoria's hand flew to her mouth.

Alexander stared at the page.

Unable to continue for several seconds.

Pregnant.

Claire had known.

And she never told him.

Or perhaps...

she never had the chance.

He forced himself onward.

I wanted to tell you.

Many times.

But every time I tried, fear stopped me.

You looked at me like I was a stranger.

Like someone you hated.

A tear slid down Alexander's face.

Because he remembered.

He remembered the anger.

The accusations.

The coldness.

And now he understood the damage he had caused.

The letter continued.

Lily is yours.

She always was.

And if something happens to me, please don't let her grow up believing she wasn't wanted.

The words shattered him completely.

Because that was exactly what had happened.

Five years.

Five years without a father.

Five years wondering questions no child should ask.

Why wasn't he here?

Why didn't he come?

Did he not love me?

Alexander lowered the letter.

Unable to read further.

Tears filled his eyes.

Across the room Lily watched quietly.

Children often understand grief better than adults realize.

And she could see something changing inside him.

Something important.

Then Martha revealed one final truth.

"The doctors gave Claire six months."

Alexander looked up.

"Six months?"

Martha nodded.

"After her diagnosis."

Victoria closed her eyes.

Cancer.

Claire had been fighting cancer while raising a child alone.

While believing Alexander hated her.

While carrying a secret she never wanted Lily to bear.

The tragedy felt almost unbearable.

Then Martha spoke the words that changed everything again.

"Before she died, she told Lily about you."

Alexander froze.

"What?"

Lily finally spoke.

Softly.

Almost shyly.

"Mom said you'd come someday."

The room became completely silent.

Alexander's heart broke.

Because despite everything...

Claire had never turned Lily against him.

She had protected his place in their daughter's heart.

Even when he didn't deserve it.

Then Lily stood.

Slowly.

Nervously.

She walked toward Alexander.

Stopped only a few feet away.

And asked the question he feared most.

"Are you really my daddy?"

Alexander looked into her eyes.

Claire's eyes.

His eyes.

Their daughter's eyes.

And for the first time in years...

he answered with complete honesty.

"Yes."

Lily smiled.

A small smile.

A hopeful smile.

A smile capable of changing an entire life.

But neither of them knew another secret was about to emerge.

A secret hidden within the final page of Claire's letter.

A secret revealing who had destroyed their family all those years ago.

May you like

And why.

TO BE CONTINUED...
