Chapter 6 - The Trap is Sprung

Two weeks later, the storm broke.
Marcus Thorne had finally pieced together the puzzle. Through a corrupted clerk in the Department of Social Services, Thorne discovered that the boy Nikolai Vulov had pulled out of St. Augustine’s was not an ordinary charity case—he was Alexei Vulov, the ghost heir of the Vulov syndicate.
Thorne realized that if Alexei grew up under Nikolai’s wing, the Vulov empire would become untouchable, backed by bloodline and absolute ruthlessness. More importantly, Thorne saw an opportunity to decapitate his rival once and for all.
It happened on a crisp Thursday afternoon while Nikolai was inspecting a container yard in South Boston.
Alexei was under the supervision of two trusted guards at the estate’s private seaside conservatory, collecting seashells along the rocky beach. A private yacht, disguised as a Coast Guard cutter, slipped silently out of the morning fog off Castle Island. Three armed mercenaries in wet suits breached the sea wall before the estate’s perimeter alarms could isolate the frequency.
By the time Viktor reached the conservatory, the guards were unconscious on the stone floor, and the heavy oak doors hung open to the empty, wind-swept shore.
Nikolai’s phone rang while he was standing on a catwalk overlooking container 440.
“Boss,” Viktor’s voice came through the encrypted line, shaking with a terror Nikolai had never heard before. “We’ve been hit. The boy is gone.”
The world stopped. The roar of the port machinery, the shouting of the dock workers, the howling harbor wind—all of it vanished into an absolute, suffocating vacuum.
“Who?” Nikolai whispered.
“Thorne,” Viktor said. “He left a burner phone on the beach. He wants a meeting at the old sugar refinery on the Neponset River. Midnight. Just you, the ledger for the shipping ports, and the boy.”

Nikolai didn't hesitate for a single microsecond.
“Gather every man we have,” Nikolai said, his voice dropping into a dark, terrifying cadence that promised absolute annihilation. “Tell them to bring everything. If a single brick of that refinery is standing when the sun comes up tomorrow, consider yourself fired.”
