Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the autumn wind blew crisp and clean through the hills of Hill Country, far away from the toxic glare of Dallas high society.

The Uptown condo had been sold—not signed over to predators, but sold legally, with the proceeds placed into a charitable foundation supporting survivors of domestic violence, managed jointly by Sofia and Elena.

They hadn't looked back.

On a sunlit stone patio overlooking a sprawling valley of golden oak trees and winding creeks, a long wooden table was set for Sunday dinner. The smell of roasted rosemary chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, and fresh apple pie drifted through the open air.

Sofia sat at the center of the table, laughing as she tossed a piece of bread to a golden retriever bounding across the grass. Her face was completely healed, her skin glowing with health and a fierce, independent strength. She was back consulting for architectural firms, designing spaces that were safe, open, and impossible to trap.

At the head of the table sat Alexander, wearing a simple plaid shirt, peeling an apple with a small pocket knife while listening to Elena recount a funny story about her neighborhood garden club.

The past wasn't erased. The scars remained—etched into memory, woven into the fabric of a ruined wedding dress hanging quietly in a cedar chest back in the city. But those scars were no longer symbols of defeat. They were armor.

Alexander looked up from his apple, catching Sofia’s eye across the table. He didn't smile broadly—he wasn't a man of big theatrical gestures—but the slow, approving nod he gave her said everything words never could.

You survived, his eyes told her. And we are home.

Sofia raised her glass of sparkling cider toward her father, her mother, and the bright, unclouded sky above.

The trap had closed around the wolves.

And the sheep had turned out to be lions.
