Chapter 6 - The Father-Daughter Dance

November arrived with the crisp, golden bite of autumn crisping the leaves along the parkways of Brooklyn.
The grand gymnasium of St. Jude’s Academy in downtown Brooklyn had been transformed into a magical wonderland. Hundreds of twinkling white fairy lights hung from the high ceiling, casting a warm, shimmering glow over tables covered in star-shaped cookies, silver punch bowls, and bouquets of late-autumn flowers.
The sound of soft piano music drifted through the room, mingling with the happy chatter of dozens of little girls in velvet dresses and patent leather shoes, holding hands with the men who loved them.
Near the center of the polished wooden floor, a circle had formed.
Poppy wore a brand-new dress made of deep emerald-green velvet, her dark braids tied with satin ribbons that matched the hem. Her face was flushed with absolute, radiant joy.
Standing in front of her was Dario Falcone.
The Ice King wore a bespoke charcoal tuxedo, his silver watch gleaming in the twinkling lights. He looked completely out of place among the teachers, fathers, and balloons, yet entirely, unquestionably at home.
The piano music swelled into a gentle waltz.
Following the instructions she had practiced for weeks, Poppy stepped forward, lifted the hem of her green velvet dress, and planted both of her polished leather shoes directly on top of Dario’s expensive black Italian shoes.
Dario looked down at her small feet resting on his toes.
Across the gymnasium, Elena stood near the refreshment table, holding a cup of punch, watching with tears streaming down her face as she laughed softly into her napkin.
Dario wrapped his arms securely around Poppy’s waist, lifting her slightly so she didn't lose her balance, and began to move in a slow, careful circle across the polished floor.
He didn't step on her toes. He didn't rush the rhythm. He danced with the precise, unflinching care of a man protecting the most precious thing in the entire world.
“Are you stepping on my shoes, Poppy?” Dario asked, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth.
“No, Mr. Falcone,” Poppy giggled, looking up into his dark eyes with absolute adoration. “You’re dancing under me!”

Dario let out a low, deep laugh that echoed softly over the music—a sound no one in Brooklyn had ever heard before.
He pulled her a little closer, holding her safe beneath the twinkling lights, knowing that his empire of fear was gone, and that his real kingdom had finally begun.
