Chapter 6: The Alliance of the Damned

The silence inside the DUMBO office was suffocating. Arthur Sterling looked from Adrian’s cold, scarred face to Sophia’s steady, unblinking gaze. He realized, with a sudden, sickening clarity, that the old hierarchy was dead. Sophia wasn't a servant he could buy off with a settlement check; she was the protected queen of the Russo empire.

"The check stays, Arthur," Adrian said flatly, his hand remaining on Sophia's shoulder, his fingers warm against her blazer. "The apology will be printed on the front page of the New York Post tomorrow morning. And your company will pay a 15% management fee to Bennett Logistics for every manifest cleared through our terminals for the next five years."

Arthur swallowed hard, his knuckles turning white on his briefcase. "Fifteen percent? That’s extortion, Adrian."

"No, Arthur. That’s business," Sophia broke in, her voice clear and decisive. She took the document from Arthur’s hands, signing her name at the bottom with a smooth, elegant stroke before sliding it back across the desk. "Your ships will be cleared for unloading at midnight tonight, Mr. Sterling. But if I hear a single whisper of disrespect from your family, or your employees, toward any member of the working-class community in this harbor, the docks will go dark for you permanently. Do we understand each other?"

Arthur stood up slowly, his face pale, his pride completely broken. He nodded once, grabbed his briefcase, and walked out of the office without looking back.

As the door clicked shut, Sophia let out a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders sagging slightly against the leather of her chair.

"You did well, Sophia," Adrian said softly, his hand sliding down from her shoulder to gently rest against the back of her neck, his thumb tracing the soft hairline there. The gesture was deeply intimate, completely natural, yet it made Sophia’s heart take a sudden, dizzying leap.

"I felt like a monster," Sophia whispered, looking up into his sharp gray eyes. "I felt like... like you."

"Being feared isn't the same as being a monster, Sophia," Adrian said, walking around the desk to sit on the edge of the wood, his face inches from hers. "Fear is the only currency people like the Sterlings understand. If you don't show them your teeth, they will eat you alive. Your mother spent her life being kind, and she died in a studio apartment with thirty thousand dollars in medical debt. I won't let that happen to you."

Sophia looked at his face—the rugged, dangerous lines of his jaw, the faint scar through his eyebrow, the profound, unyielding intensity in his eyes. For the last week, she had been telling herself that he was just protecting her out of a sense of family honor. But right now, with his body so close to hers, smelling of expensive tobacco and cedarwood, she realized the truth.

He didn't just see his father's savior when he looked at her.

He saw her.

"Adrian..." she breathed, using his first name for the very first time.

Before he could answer, the glass door to the office flew open.

Lily Bennett, Sophia’s nineteen-year-old sister, stepped into the room, her backpack slung over her shoulder, her face flushed from running up the stairs from the subway. She stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes darting from Sophia’s custom silk suit to the feared underworld boss sitting on her desk.

"Sophia?" Lily whispered, her eyes wide with a sudden, intense panic. "What is going on? The dean of Boston University called me this morning. He said my tuition was paid in full by a private corporation called Russo Holdings. Sophia... please tell me you didn't do something crazy to save me."
