CHAPTER 2: THE FIRE NO ONE TALKED ABOUT

Richard Bennett barely slept that night.

Long after leaving the hospital, he sat alone in his penthouse office overlooking the city.

The lights below blurred together as memories he had spent twelve years suppressing came rushing back.

Memories of his wife.

The fire.

And the two children he believed had disappeared forever.

On his desk lay a photograph.

Old and slightly faded.

The picture showed Richard standing beside his wife, Emily Bennett, outside a small children's shelter called Haven House.

Emily was smiling.

One arm wrapped around Richard.

The other around two young children.

A little boy.

And a little girl.

Richard's hands trembled.

Because the children in the photograph looked remarkably familiar.

The little boy had Noah's eyes.

The little girl had Lily's smile.

"No..."

Richard whispered.

The next morning he returned to the hospital.

This time with investigators.

Private researchers.

And a box of records he had locked away years ago.

Lily was sleeping when he arrived.

Noah sat quietly beside her reading a book.

The teenager immediately noticed the tension on Richard's face.

"What happened?"

Noah asked.

Richard sat down slowly.

For the first time in years, the billionaire businessman looked vulnerable.

"I need to ask you something."

Noah nodded.

Richard carefully placed the old photograph on the bed.

The moment Noah saw it, his eyes widened.

"Where did you get that?"

Richard's heart raced.

"You recognize it?"

Noah swallowed.

Slowly.

"That's us."

The room became silent.

Richard felt the air leave his lungs.

For twelve years he had lived with uncertainty.

Now, for the first time, confirmation stood directly in front of him.

The children survived.

But that only created a larger question.

How?

Because twelve years earlier Haven House had burned to the ground.

The fire killed several people.

Destroyed records.

And triggered one of the largest investigations in the city's history.

Among the missing were Richard's wife Emily...

And two children she had desperately tried to protect.

Noah lowered his eyes.

Fragments of memory began surfacing.

Smoke.

Sirens.

Running.

Someone carrying him.

Someone shouting.

Then one memory became clearer than all the others.

A woman kneeling in front of him.

Holding his shoulders.

Crying.

"Protect your sister."

Noah froze.

He had heard those words before.

Many times.

In dreams.

In nightmares.

But until now he never knew whose voice it was.

Richard looked at him carefully.

"What do you remember?"

Noah hesitated.

Then spoke.

"There was a woman."

Richard's chest tightened.

"She told me to take Lily and run."

The businessman closed his eyes.

Because he already knew who that woman was.

Emily.

His wife.

The woman authorities declared dead after the fire.

The woman whose body was never found.

Hours later, investigators reopened old case files.

For the first time in over a decade.

And what they discovered shocked everyone.

The original fire report contained inconsistencies.

Missing witness statements.

Altered timelines.

Evidence that should have been included but wasn't.

Someone had interfered with the investigation.

Intentionally.

Richard sat silently as investigators reviewed documents.

Then one detective suddenly stopped.

His expression changed immediately.

"What is it?"

Richard asked.

The detective slowly slid a file across the table.

Inside was a witness statement.

One that had never been entered into evidence.

A security guard had reported seeing a woman leave the burning building carrying two children.

The description matched Emily perfectly.

Richard stared at the report.

Unable to breathe.

"That's impossible."

The detective shook his head.

"No."

Then he pointed to another line.

The witness claimed Emily wasn't alone.

Someone else was with her.

A man.

A man later identified as Victor Kane.

The same businessman who owned the property surrounding Haven House.

The same businessman who became incredibly wealthy after the orphanage was destroyed.

Richard's stomach dropped.

Because he knew that name.

Very well.

Victor Kane had been his business partner.

Twelve years ago.

And suddenly every piece of the puzzle began fitting together.

The fire.

The missing records.

The vanished children.

The missing body.

Someone had worked very hard to keep the truth buried.

That evening Richard returned to Lily's hospital room.

The young girl was awake.

Watching the sunset through the window.

Noah sat beside her.

Protective as always.

Richard stood quietly in the doorway.

Studying them.

For years he believed he had lost everything.

Now he wasn't so sure.

Because the evidence suggested something impossible.

Emily may have survived the fire.

And if she survived...

She might still be alive.

Richard looked at the bracelet around Lily's wrist.

Then at Noah.

"There's something I need to tell both of you."

The room became silent.

"What?"

Noah asked.

Richard struggled to speak.

Because the truth sounded unbelievable.

Even to him.

Finally he whispered:

"I think I know who your mother was."

Lily's eyes widened.

Noah froze.

And neither child was prepared for what Richard would reveal next.

Because hidden inside Emily's old records was proof that Noah and Lily weren't orphans at all.

They were heirs to a secret worth millions.

And someone had spent twelve years making sure they never discovered it.
