PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE LOCKET

The store fell completely silent.

Emma couldn't breathe.

Couldn't think.

Couldn't look away from the silver locket resting in the stranger's hand.

Her mother's locket.

The tiny scratch near the clasp was still there.

The small dent on the back remained exactly where she remembered.

She had seen it thousands of times growing up.

Her mother wore it every day.

Every.

Single.

Day.

Then one morning, three years ago, both the locket and her mother had vanished.

Along with every answer Emma desperately needed.

The man stared at her.

His face had gone pale.

As though he had just discovered a ghost standing in front of him.

"Who are you?" Emma demanded.

The baby shifted weakly against her shoulder.

She tightened her grip protectively.

The stranger swallowed hard.

"My name is Richard Bennett."

The name meant nothing to her.

Nothing at all.

Yet something in his voice made the clerk step back quietly.

As if he sensed this conversation wasn't meant for outsiders.

Richard looked down at the locket.

Then back at Emma.

"Your mother's name was Sarah Carter."

It wasn't a question.

Emma froze.

A chill raced down her spine.

"How do you know that?"

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he slowly opened the locket.

Inside were two faded photographs.

Emma's eyes widened.

One photo showed her as a little girl sitting on her mother's lap.

The second photo showed someone she had never seen before.

A young man.

Smiling.

Standing beside Sarah.

Richard noticed her confusion.

"That's me."

Emma blinked.

The picture looked at least twenty years old.

The young man in the photograph was unmistakably Richard.

But that only raised more questions.

"What are you talking about?"

For a moment, Richard seemed unsure whether to continue.

Then he made a decision.

"Your mother was my sister."

The words hit Emma like lightning.

"No."

Richard nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"That's impossible."

"Why?"

"Because Mom didn't have any family."

His eyes filled with sadness.

"That's what she wanted everyone to believe."

Emma stared at him.

The room suddenly felt too small.

Too warm.

Too confusing.

Three years of questions were crashing together all at once.

Richard rubbed his face.

"I've been searching for Sarah for fifteen years."

"What?"

"We lost contact after a family dispute."

Emma's mind reeled.

Everything she thought she knew about her mother was falling apart.

Richard looked genuinely heartbroken.

"I hired investigators."

"I checked hospitals."

"I searched shelters."

"I searched everywhere."

His voice cracked slightly.

"But I never found her."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

The old wound she carried every day reopened.

"Then where is she?"

Richard's expression darkened.

"I don't know."

The answer crushed her.

For one brief second she had hoped.

Maybe this man knew where her mother was.

Maybe she was alive.

Maybe everything would finally make sense.

Instead, she was left with even more questions.

Richard glanced at Liam.

The baby's eyes were barely open now.

His tiny face looked exhausted.

Concern flashed across Richard's face.

"When was the last time he ate?"

Emma hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

"Yesterday morning."

The clerk gasped.

Richard's entire posture stiffened.

"What?"

Emma looked away.

"We ran out of formula."

The truth sounded even worse spoken aloud.

Richard's eyes widened.

"Who is taking care of you?"

No answer.

"Emma?"

Still no answer.

Because there wasn't one.

No parents.

No relatives.

No neighbors checking in.

No social workers.

Just Emma.

And Liam.

Alone.

For months.

Richard finally understood.

The realization hit him visibly.

His jaw tightened.

His eyes hardened.

Not at Emma.

At the situation.

At whoever had allowed this to happen.

"Where do you live?"

Emma immediately took a step backward.

Every survival instinct returned.

"No."

"I'm trying to help."

"No."

Richard nodded slowly.

As if expecting that answer.

Trust wasn't something abandoned children handed out easily.

Especially not to strangers claiming to be family.

Then the store's front door suddenly burst open.

The loud bang made everyone jump.

A man staggered inside.

Dirty clothes.

Bloodshot eyes.

Strong smell of alcohol.

Emma froze.

The terror on her face was immediate.

Instant.

Absolute.

Richard noticed.

The clerk noticed.

Everyone noticed.

The man pointed directly at Emma.

"There you are."

Emma's entire body started shaking.

Richard stood up immediately.

"Who is that?"

Emma's voice barely came out.

"My stepfather."

A cold silence spread through the store.

The man stumbled closer.

His eyes locked onto Liam.

Then onto Emma.

"You little thief."

Richard stepped between them.

The drunk man's expression changed.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

And for the first time that night, Richard Bennett looked genuinely afraid.

Not for himself.

For Emma.

Because the look in the man's eyes revealed something terrifying.

He hadn't come to bring the children home.

He had come because he realized they were trying to escape.

And judging by the rage written across his face...

May you like

he wasn't leaving without them.
