Chapter 8 - Under the Patchwork Stars

The autumn wind rustled through the oak trees surrounding the Morelli estate, carrying the crisp scent of falling leaves and woodsmoke.

Inside the master suite on the top floor, the room was bathed in the warm, amber glow of bedside lamps. The heavy velvet curtains were drawn back, revealing a clear night sky dotted with brilliant stars piercing through the Manhattan skyline’s distant haze.

Madeline stood by the window, wearing a soft silk robe, looking out over the sprawling private gardens where white roses bloomed late into the season.

Strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a solid, familiar chest. A warm chin rested gently on her shoulder.

“You’re quiet tonight,” Enzo murmured, his breath warm against her neck.

“I was just thinking about three weeks ago,” Madeline confessed softly, resting her hands over his. “When I stood outside those iron gates with my worn leather purse and my prayers stuck in my throat. If someone had told me then that I’d be standing here—in your arms, with my family safe, with a little girl who calls me family—I would have told them they were out of their mind.”

Enzo turned her gently in his arms so she was facing him. His dark eyes were pools of absolute, unwavering devotion.

“You walked through those gates because you were meant to, Madeline,” Enzo said, his voice deep and steady. “You didn't just save Isabella from her silence. You saved me from mine.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box—simple, elegant, and entirely unpretentious.

When he popped the lid open, a ring caught the lamplight: a vintage platinum band set with a deep, midnight-blue sapphire flanked by two small diamonds, classic and timeless.

Madeline’s breath caught. She didn't cry—she wasn't the kind of woman who cried out of weakness—but her eyes shimmered with bright, unshed tears of pure joy.

“Enzo...” she whispered.

“I don't care about boardrooms, or high-society approval, or underworld syndicates,” Enzo said, his voice dropping into a register of profound, raw vulnerability. “All I care about is waking up every morning with you by my side. Marry me, Madeline. Be my wife. Be my partner in everything.”

Madeline didn't hesitate for a single second.

“Yes,” she whispered, throwing her arms around his neck and pulling him down into a fierce, passionate kiss. “Yes, Enzo. A million times yes.”

Down the hall, in her cozy bedroom under the patchwork stars, little Isabella woke up briefly, listening to the quiet, happy murmur of voices coming from the master suite.

She rolled over, clutching her stuffed dinosaur in a tuxedo, smiling into her pillow.

In the heart of the Morelli estate, the darkness had finally surrendered to the light. The war was over, the ghosts were laid to rest, and a new family had been forged in fire, loyalty, and unconditional love.

And as the city lights flickered endlessly against the New York night, Madeline Brooks knew with absolute certainty that she would never have to shrink herself again.

She was home.
