Chapter 3 - The Arrival of the Viper

Thirty minutes into the surgery, the doors of the surgical suite swung open, and a nurse rushed in, holding a encrypted tablet toward Claire.

“Dr. Rowan, social services and hospital security are on the line. The boy outside—Eli—just told the social worker that the sister, Tessa, deliberately poisoned your patient to force a signature on property documents. Security is checking the parking lot right now, but—”

“Is Tessa still on hospital grounds?” Claire interrupted, her hands waist-deep in the sterile field as Dr. Vale carefully lifted a tiny, silent infant from the uterine incision.

“She just walked through the front lobby asking for Mara Carter’s room,” the nurse relayed breathlessly.

“Don't let her near the maternity ward,” Claire commanded, keeping her eyes locked on the newborn.

The baby—a tiny girl, prematurely pink and slippery—did not cry immediately. Dr. Vale suctioned her airway with rapid, practiced movements, rubbing her back with a sterile towel.

For three terrifying seconds, the operating room held its collective breath.

Then, a weak, indignant squawk echoed through the theater.

“She’s breathing! Good girl,” Dr. Vale sighed in immense relief, handing the infant over to the neonatal team waiting by the warming crib. “Get her to the NICU for observation and respiratory support.”

Claire looked over at Mara’s monitor. The digoxin Fab was working; Mara’s blood pressure was climbing back into a safe, perfusing range, and her heart rhythm had settled into a normal sinus rhythm.

“She’s stabilizing,” Claire announced, stepping back slightly to let the closure team take over. She ripped off her gloves, grabbed a secure phone from the scrub nurse, and dialed hospital security. “This is Dr. Rowan. Lock down the second-floor elevators and secure the maternity lobby. Do not let Tessa Vance leave the building.”

Downstairs in the main lobby, the automatic glass doors parted to reveal a woman in an expensive camel-hair coat, her hair styled in immaculate blonde waves that showed no sign of the rain outside. Tessa Carter strode toward the information desk with the practiced, aggressive confidence of someone accustomed to intimidating service workers.

“Mara Carter,” Tessa demanded, leaning over the counter. “Room number, please. I’m her sister. I need to check on her belongings.”

“Ms. Vance?” a calm, steady voice asked from behind her.

Tessa turned to see two uniformed hospital security officers flanked by a tall, broad-shouldered man in a gray suit—Detective Miller of the Lakewood Police Department.

“Yes?” Tessa’s smile was brittle, perfectly rehearsed. “Can I help you?”

“You can come with us,” Detective Miller said, flashing a silver badge before pocketing it. “We have several questions regarding a tampered prescription bottle, a poisoned patient in the intensive care unit, and allegations of attempted financial coercion.”

Tessa’s face didn't panic; instead, it hardened into an expression of indignant outrage. “Are you out of your mind? My sister is pregnant and sick, and you’re harassing me? I brought her medicine this morning out of the goodness of my heart! Where is my nephew? Where is Eli?”

“Eli is safe,” Detective Miller said quietly, stepping closer so she couldn't retreat toward the doors. “And he happens to remember every single detail of your visit. Turn around and put your hands behind your back, Ms. Vance.”
