Two Years Later.
The summer evening was warm and golden, painting the rolling hills of Oakhaven in brilliant shades of amber and rose.
In the backyard of a beautiful, sunlit farmhouse surrounded by blooming apple trees, a large family barbecue was in full swing.
Evelyn Ross, now an award-winning senior investigative editor for the state's largest newspaper, was sitting on a wooden bench on the porch, laughing as she reviewed draft pages of her bestselling book—titled The Key of Courage, dedicated entirely to Lily.
Near the grill, David and Chief Thomas Miller were flipping burgers, chatting happily like lifelong brothers.
Sarah was laying out fresh berry pies on the picnic table, her face smooth, bright, and completely free of the terror that had once shadowed her life.
And out in the green grass of the lawn, four-year-old Lily was running freely through the sunshine, her loud, beautiful laughter ringing out across the meadow as she chased a playful golden retriever puppy.
She stopped for a moment, looking down at her tiny wrist, where a small silver bracelet hung—a gift from Evelyn, engraved with the words: Little Keys Open Big Doors.
"Lily!" David called out warmly from the porch, waving his arm. "Come get some pie, sweetie!"
"Coming, Daddy!" Lily cheered, her tiny boots pitter-pattering across the soft grass.
