Chapter 8 - A Sanctuary Built from Ashes

Six months later.

The Chicago winter had softened into the warm, fragrant light of early summer.

The Duca estate had undergone a transformation that amazed everyone who visited. The high concrete walls remained, but the armed men who used to stand on the perimeter in dark tuxedos had been replaced by a subtle, highly trained security detail dressed in plain clothes. The south garden—where two thousand white roses had once been set up for a fake wedding—was now a lush, green playground filled with blooming wildflowers, a wooden swing set, and a small garden patch where Sophia grew tomatoes with Donna Rosa.

Lorenzo had systematically restructured the Duca empire.

He withdrew the family from every illegal enterprise, pouring their vast wealth into legitimate shipping logistics, clean energy infrastructure, and a massive philanthropic foundation named The Marcus Bennett Children's Trust, which provided free medical care and legal aid to families affected by violent crime across the Midwest.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, a quiet garden party was underway in the south lawn.

There were no senators, no judges, no rival dons sipping champagne from crystal flutes.

Just Donna Rosa sitting on a lawn chair, watching over four-year-old children playing tag, while Vincent Russo grilled steaks on a large stone patio.

Standing near the swing set was Sarah Bennett.

She walked with a slight cane, but her face was full of health and color. She wore a simple yellow summer dress, her brown hair pulled back, watching her daughter soar high into the air on the wooden swing.

"Higher, Lorenzo! Higher!" Sophia cheered, her laughter ringing across the garden like silver chimes.

Lorenzo stood behind the swing, pushing her gently, his broad face lit up with a brilliant, unreserved smile.

"Any higher and you'll catch a cloud, little girl!" Lorenzo teased, catching the swing smoothly as it came back down.

Sarah walked over, leaning against the wooden frame of the swing set, her eyes warm with gratitude.

"You spoil her too much, Lorenzo," Sarah said with a soft laugh.

"A girl who saved my life deserves to be spoiled a little," Lorenzo replied, winking at Sophia as she scrambled off the seat to chase the golden retriever across the grass.

Sarah looked at Lorenzo—at the powerful man who had once been the most feared Don in the Midwest, now wearing plain jeans and a dark polo shirt, grass stains on his knees from playing soccer earlier that morning.

"I never got to thank you properly," Sarah said quietly, her voice thick with emotion. "For everything. The house, the medical care, Marcus’s legacy..."

"You don't owe me thanks, Sarah," Lorenzo said softly, looking out over the garden. "Marcus gave me back my father’s honor. He gave me the truth. Supporting you and Sophia is the highest privilege of my life."

Sarah reached out, laying her hand gently over his forearm. "He would be so proud to know she has a guardian like you."

Lorenzo looked at her—at her warm, sea-glass eyes, her gentle smile, and the quiet strength she had displayed in rebuilding her life after unimaginable tragedy. Over the past six months, their shared grief had transformed into a deep, unspoken bond that had slowly, beautifully blossomed into something far more profound.

"I don't just want to be her guardian, Sarah," Lorenzo murmured, his gray eyes locking onto hers with an absolute, unwavering truth. "I want to be a father to her. And I want to be a husband to you. If you'll have me."

Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. Tears shone in her eyes, but a radiant, beautiful smile broke across her face.

"Are you asking me to marry you, Lorenzo Duca?" she whispered.

Lorenzo pulled a small velvet box from his pocket. Inside rested his mother's platinum ring—the five-carat emerald-cut diamond that had once been brought to a fake wedding.

"No silk column dresses," Lorenzo smiled gently. "No politicians. No armed guards. Just us. In this garden."

Sarah wiped a tear from her cheek, stepping close to him and wrapping her arms around his neck.

"Yes," she whispered against his lips. "A thousand times yes."
