Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Ledger

The isolation of the cabin did not last long. Three days after the arrest, the media frenzy had evolved from a curiosity into a full-scale manhunt. Arthur knew his father’s reach extended far beyond the law; Elias Sterling was a man who had built a private network of fixers, mercenaries, and corporate spies.

Arthur moved with surgical precision. He had anticipated the trackers. Using a series of pre-arranged protocols he had set up years ago, he moved Clara to a safe house in the deep woods of the Pacific Northwest.

"Papa, who are those men?" Clara asked, pointing at the grainy footage on Arthur’s laptop—men in black suits sweeping through the estate, destroying evidence.

"They are people who think they can hide the truth," Arthur replied, his voice steely. "But they’ve forgotten that the truth is a fire, Clara. You can try to put it out, but it leaves scars."

The drama escalated when Arthur’s own brother, Marcus, tracked them. Marcus wasn't just there to talk; he was there to recover a hard drive that contained the one piece of evidence Arthur had kept hidden—the "Genesis Document." It detailed the illegal disposal of toxic waste by the Sterling chemical plants, the real source of the family’s hidden billions. If that went public, no amount of lawyers could save them.

Marcus arrived under the cover of a freezing rain. He didn't use the front door; he kicked in the back window. The confrontation was short and violent. Arthur, having trained for years in the martial arts his father forced him to study to "toughen him up," turned his father’s weapon against the family. He subdued Marcus, pinning him to the floorboards.

"You’re just like him, Marcus," Arthur hissed. "You’d burn the world down to keep your stock options."

"He’s my father!" Marcus spat back.

"No," Arthur corrected. "He was a parasite. And the host is finally dead."
