Chapter 8 - The Awakening of the King

Three days later, the mountain air was crisp and clear, carrying the scent of pine and woodsmoke.

I stood on the front porch of Hollow Bread & Pastry, looking out over the winding valley. My legs felt stiff after weeks of confinement, but as I planted my feet firmly against the wooden boards, I felt an overwhelming surge of strength I hadn't felt in years.

The wheelchair sat empty behind me. I didn't need it anymore. The "paralysis" had never been physical—it had been the crushing weight of a life built on lies, blood, and synthetic power.

A black luxury sedan pulled up to the curb. The rear door opened, and local authorities stepped aside as a federal prosecutor—working off the encrypted financial ledgers Sal Marcone had been carrying—began dismantling Castellano Enterprises asset by asset. Uncle Gino was already in federal custody, his empire collapsing like a house of cards as every secret account, corrupt judge, and shell company was exposed to the light.

Lily walked out onto the porch, handing me a steaming mug of black coffee. She smiled, leaning against the wooden railing beside me.

“You look different today, Rocco,” she said quietly.

I took a sip of the coffee, looking down at the bustling street where neighbors were finally smiling, safe from the corporate sharks and mob enforcers who had tried to steal their home.

“I’m not Rocco Castellano anymore,” I said, my voice carrying the steady, unshakeable resonance of a man who had finally found his true name. “Marcus Vance. And I think I’m going to need a job. Do you need an apprentice baker?”

Lily laughed—a bright, musical sound that filled the crisp mountain morning with infinite promise.

“Only if you promise to wash the flour off your face, Marcus,” she said, taking my hand.

I looked out at the endless green peaks of the West Virginia mountains. For the first time in my life, I didn't need an empire, an army, or a throne. I had found something far more powerful than fear.

I had found home.
