Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Secrets

The hospital was a blur of fluorescent light and urgent, muted voices. Mia and Lily were whisked away to the trauma ward, their small bodies a shock of mud and misery against the crisp, white sheets. I was left in the hallway, an intruder in a world of healing. I had spent my life controlling variables, predicting market shifts, and sanitizing the edges of my existence. But sitting there, with the mud of a Chicago gutter drying on my skin, I felt a radical, uncontrollable shift in my own trajectory.
The doctors came out hours later. "They're stable, Mr. Whitaker," the lead physician said, looking at me with a mixture of curiosity and exhaustion. "But they are profoundly malnourished. And there is... trauma. They aren't speaking."
I went in to see them. Lily was asleep, a rhythmic, fragile sound. Mia was awake, watching the door. When I entered, her body didn't relax; it went rigid. She was guarding her sister even in her sleep.
"I called the police," I said softly, sitting by the bed. "They want to know where you came from. They want to know who put you there."
Mia’s eyes filled with a sudden, sharp clarity. "They can't," she whispered. "He said he’d find us."
"Who?"

"The shadow man," she replied, her voice trembling. "He doesn't have a face, but he has the smell of sulfur and old coins. He took us from the garden, and he told us if we didn't stay quiet in the dark, the dark would eat us."
I leaned back, a cold shiver running down my spine. This wasn't a standard missing-persons case. This was a nightmare. I looked at their small, scarred hands and realized that my charity gala, my wealth, and my reputation were completely useless tools against the kind of monster that hid in plain sight.
