Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

“Police! Nobody move!”
The command echoed through the small hospital room like a gunshot.
Before Daniel could even turn his head, three uniformed officers swarmed into the room. Detective Miller led the charge, his badge held high in one hand and a pair of heavy steel handcuffs gleaming in the other.
Daniel froze, half-standing from his chair.
“What is this? What’s going on?!” Daniel shouted, his voice instantly spiking with confusion and shock as two officers grabbed his arms, forcing him down against the mattress and pinning his hands behind his back.
“Daniel Carter, you are under arrest for the attempted poisoning and aggravated assault of a minor,” Detective Miller announced crisply, the words formal and cold.
“Poisoning?! Are you out of your mind?!” Daniel thrashed against the officers, his face flushing a dark, furious red. He twisted his neck around, staring wildly at me. “Rach! Tell them they’re insane! Tell them I didn't do anything! What is happening?!”
I sat paralyzed in the recliner, unable to speak, unable to breathe.
“Put the cuffs on him and read him his rights,” Miller ordered, ignoring Daniel’s protests.
As the cold steel clicked shut around Daniel’s wrists, he didn't look angry anymore. His expression dissolved into a look of absolute, soul-crushing betrayal as his eyes locked onto mine.
“Rach... you think I did this?” he whispered, his voice cracking violently. “You actually think I tried to hurt our little girl?”
The weight of those words crushed the last remaining defense mechanisms I had. I stood up, stumbling backward until my knees hit the edge of the hospital bed.
“I saw the footage, Daniel!” I cried out, the dam finally breaking. “I saw the security video of you standing right here at midnight, injecting something into her IV line! Nurse Brenda found the empty vial in the trash!”
Daniel stopped struggling. He stared at me, his eyes wide with a terrifying, absolute confusion.
“Video? What video? Rach, I wasn't even at the hospital at midnight last night! I was at home—I was asleep until you called me about the lab results!”
“Save it for the station, Mr. Carter,” Detective Miller said firmly, grabbing him by the shoulder and hauling him toward the door.
“Rach, listen to me!” Daniel yelled, his voice echoing down the corridor as they dragged him out into the hallway. “Check my truck! Check my phone! Someone is setting me up! Someone is setting me up!”
The heavy door slammed shut, cutting off his voice.
The room plunged back into silence, broken only by the rhythmic, indifferent beep of Emily’s heart monitor.
I collapsed back into the plastic chair, burying my face in my hands as dry, racking sobs tore through my chest. I felt hollowed out, as if my entire existence had been put through a meat grinder.
Ten minutes later, the door creaked open again.
It wasn't Detective Miller. It was Nurse Brenda. She slipped into the room quietly, glancing back into the hallway to make sure the coast was clear before locking the door behind her.
“Mrs. Carter,” Brenda whispered urgently, crouching down beside my chair.
I looked up, my eyes red and swollen. “What? What else could possibly go wrong?”
“Listen to me very carefully,” Brenda said, her voice dropping to a breathless whisper. “When the police brought Mr. Carter down to the security office to inventory his personal belongings, I managed to look at the access logs for the security cameras system myself.”
I frowned, wiping a stray tear from my cheek. “What are you talking about?”
“The video they showed you—the one of the man in the gray jacket injecting the IV line at midnight,” Brenda said, her eyes wide with fear. “It wasn't recorded on the hospital’s internal security server. It was uploaded into the system from an external USB drive at 12:05 A.M. tonight by someone using Dr. Evans’s master IT credentials.”
My heart skipped a beat. “An external drive? You mean... someone faked it?”
“I don't know if it’s faked or real, but I know who had access to Dr. Evans’s office computer at midnight,” Brenda said urgently. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, crumpled piece of paper, pressing it into my palm. “Go to the hospital’s underground records archive in Sub-Basement B. Look at the visitor logs from three weeks ago—the exact day Emily’s headaches started. You’ll find a name there that the police haven't seen yet.”

Before I could ask another question, Brenda stood up quickly, smoothed down her uniform, and unlocked the door.
“Stay here, Mrs. Carter,” she whispered. “And trust no one.”
