CHAPTER 1: THE WOMAN WITH THE SWOLLEN LEG
The emergency room was unusually quiet for a Friday evening.
Nurses moved between patients.
Monitors beeped steadily.
Doctors hurried through brightly lit hallways.
Then the automatic doors opened.
A pregnant woman stepped inside.
She looked exhausted.
Terrified.
And barely able to walk.
One hand rested protectively on her pregnant belly.
The other gripped the reception counter for support.
"My leg," she whispered.
"It hurts."
The triage nurse immediately noticed the swelling.
Her left leg looked significantly larger than the right.
The skin was stretched tight.
Red and inflamed.
Almost as if something was trapped beneath it.
"How far along are you?" the nurse asked.
"Thirty-four weeks."
The nurse's expression tightened.
A swollen leg during pregnancy could mean many things.
Some were harmless.
Others could be deadly.
Within minutes, the woman—whose name was Rachel Turner—was taken to an examination room.
Dr. Michael Grant arrived shortly afterward.
At first, he suspected a blood clot.
The symptoms fit.
Swelling.
Pain.
Difficulty walking.
But something seemed unusual.
Very unusual.
Rachel appeared terrified whenever anyone approached her leg.
More frightened than someone experiencing ordinary pain.
Dr. Grant knelt beside the examination bed.
"I'm going to take a look."
Rachel immediately grabbed his wrist.
"No."
The reaction startled him.
"What do you mean, no?"
Her eyes filled with panic.
"Please don't touch it."
Now his concern deepened.
"Rachel, I need to examine you."
She hesitated.
Then slowly released his hand.
The moment Dr. Grant placed his fingers against the swollen area, he felt something impossible.
Something moving.
Beneath the skin.
He immediately pulled his hand away.
For a brief second he wondered if he imagined it.
Then it moved again.
The sensation was unmistakable.
Something shifted beneath the surface.
Not a muscle twitch.
Not a pulse.
Movement.
Deliberate movement.
Rachel looked away.
As though she already knew.
Dr. Grant stood slowly.
And quietly stepped into the hallway.
